3G iPhone rumors building up steam
Apple's next big event is still over two months away, but the iPhone rumor mill is suddenly in full swing, and we'd say the buzz is back after that short-lived Mossberg "60 days" euphoria wore off. Tgdaily is the one making waves today, claiming that we'll see next-gen 8GB and 16GB iPhones debut at WWDC this June for $399 and $499, and that the iPod touch will always offer twice the storage at any given price point. The new units are said to feature revised casings that eliminate the current model's "plasticky" feel, which is interesting, because that supposedly-leaked image from the other day seems pretty ultra-plasticky to us, but we're not exactly expecting any of these rumors to be true, let alone add up. Other than the re-design, tgdaily says there aren't any OS or interface changes in store, and that Apple is really serious about building the Cocoa Touch platform in addition to OS X-- hence the two bridges on those WWDC invites that went out. That's about it -- nothing too shocking, really, but we'd still take all this stuff with a huge grain of salt until Steve sets things straight.

since we haven't had a proper apple rumor in a few days, lets go wildly speculating today.
Funke, Tobias Dr. @ Apr 9th 2008 10:56PM
I'm hearing that in order to compensate for the 3G connection's massive drain on battery, the newest revision will replace the lithium ion battery with a methanol fuel cell.
Then again, I heard that every PS3 would ship with a banana.
Aguiluz @ Apr 9th 2008 11:02PM
What if the rumors are all steam?
Martin @ Apr 9th 2008 11:17PM
I heard it would have a mini nuclear reactor in it. It might give off deadly radiation, cost a fortune, overheat, explode have a recessed headphone jack... but its pretty!!!!
Framit @ Apr 10th 2008 8:41AM
My PS3 said it came with Spiderman 3, but indeed it came with a banana. I guess it was only some PS3s.
duxxyuk @ Apr 25th 2008 10:29AM
I'm hoping that Apple will supply free bananaman episodes with each iphone sold ....
Aguiluz @ Apr 9th 2008 10:49PM
@Mark
First what?
Wolfticket @ Apr 9th 2008 10:51PM
3g eh? Next thing you you'll be able to send mms, record video and use mp3s as ringtones.
MJB @ Apr 10th 2008 2:11PM
you actually can add mp3 ringtones using garageband & itunes.
ryan @ Apr 9th 2008 10:51PM
yeah that "leaked" iPhone looked like a coloware product with a photoshopped serial number on it
Inugami @ Apr 9th 2008 10:53PM
3G IPHONE COMING OUT BEFORE JULY 24!!!!!!
macserv @ Apr 9th 2008 10:56PM
"...that supposedly-leaked image from the other day seems pretty ultra-plasticky to us..."
I don't think that was plastic. I think it was powder-coated metal. It just doesn't look like plastic to me, and metal would certainly explain how they've reduced the "plasticky" feel.
It would not, however, explain how signal gets in and out.
Jeff @ Apr 10th 2008 12:38AM
The top 1/5 portion of the iPhone could have a plastic enclosure, while the bottom 4/5th would have a metal one. The antenna would be at the top.
Mr. S. @ Apr 10th 2008 5:04AM
the new iPhone, now with more scratches!
ezra hilyer @ Apr 9th 2008 11:10PM
This is good news to me, not that I really want the 3g phone (I live out in the sticks, where 3g is not) but that will make for a short-term massive drop in current rev prices and I will get rid of my touch and get the iphone.
I am much more excited about the coming macbook pro design refresh. I will be waiting to order one of those as soon as they are announced.

SO I got my iPhone for my birthday about a month ago, and I am going to get screwed out of the G3. Sometimes I hate Apple.
Bender Bending Rodriguez @ Apr 9th 2008 11:24PM
The iPhone was released summer of last year, Jobs said a 3G iPhone would be out in 2008, and the speculation that it will out in June is rampant.
Perhaps you shouldn't have opened your iPhone and returned it for store credit that you could use in 2 months instead of blaming a company for not working their product releases around your birthday.
Duke 2 @ Apr 9th 2008 11:37PM
And who on the planet didn't know a month ago that Apple was coming out with a 3G phone... you and, I dunno... the unborn????
Sorry dude, but you got some misplaced corporate hatred goin on. Even Bin Laden heard about the impending iPhone holed up in a cave for Pete's sake- lol
btw- never underestimate Steve's proclivity for one-ups-manship, just to make all the analysts who claim to know everything look foolish.
Think 3.5G over 3G for example and possibly OLED as an answer to higher battery drain from the new chipset :)
Farmit @ Apr 10th 2008 8:51AM
Bender +1
Mark -$399.99
Jeremy S @ Apr 9th 2008 11:15PM
And the 3G iPhone warning level for today is:
Orange.
Allan @ Apr 9th 2008 11:17PM
First douchebag, it would appear...
Steffen Jobbs @ Apr 9th 2008 11:17PM
"The first shall be the last and the last shall be the first." I've heard that somewhere, but not exactly sure what it means. You have my congratulations.
Now for the important stuff. Just two more months to go before Apple's world domination. Let the hype and buzz begin. 3G, 3G, 3G. 3G iPhone, lets go.
Nate the Prophet @ Apr 9th 2008 11:19PM
3G iPhones---fine. But don't call me until they hit 32GB.
IndiaTech @ Apr 9th 2008 11:24PM
Hey guys, don't shout at Mark! Even I was this excited when I got my first boner...
Stem $ell @ Apr 9th 2008 11:28PM
Wait, folks! There's been a huge 'Moss-understanding' here! Due to its touchscreen's well documented 'finger-smudge' problem, in June all iPhones will be equipped with 'Squee-G', *not* 3G
Duke 2 @ Apr 9th 2008 11:41PM
ok, I don't often laugh out loud, but that was funny- lol (literally)
rawnnie @ Apr 9th 2008 11:28PM
"The new units are said to feature revised casings that eliminate the current model's "plasticky" feel"
The current model is not even slightly plasticky.
Funke, Tobias Dr. @ Apr 10th 2008 12:22AM
The black plate on the back is what I assume they are referring to as "plasticky".
The plate on mine sounds like brittle plastic when I tap it, and it clicks if I press in towards the top of it (right underneath the GB label).
It's really the only gripe I have about what I would call the workmanship. I fault "California design" for the recessed headphone jack.
GreezyG @ Apr 9th 2008 11:30PM
ok...3G iPhone + slingbox app = total win!!!1!!one!!
That one app is enough for me to shell out another $500 on another iPhone, and there will be apps o' plenty over the next several months
Griffon @ Apr 9th 2008 11:41PM
Frankly I'm more interested in a blue tooth stack that dose suck rocks (hello GPS, stereo headphones..).
Jonathan Worrel @ Apr 10th 2008 12:18AM
"Tgdaily is the one making waves today, claiming that we'll see next-gen 8GB and 16GB iPhones debut at WWDC this June for $399 and $499"
WTF still no 32GB 3G iPhone?! So you're trying to tell me that with all the flash memory enhancements we've seen over the past year, as well as my wearing and tearing patience over the past year, I'm still not gonna live the dream?!
THIS HAD BETTER BE SPECULATION ENGADGET.
*facepalm*
narutogrey @ Apr 10th 2008 12:25AM
So it really looks like there's more and more evidence that the 3G iPhone is going to come out before the end of the year.
ruindpzzle @ Apr 10th 2008 12:30AM
@Nate the Prophet - Agreed. I'm not "touching" it til it hits 32GB.
Y3k-Bug @ Apr 10th 2008 12:47AM
I would imagine the phones to eventually max out at 64GB. I can't imagine needing more storage than that on a PHONE.
Sean @ Apr 10th 2008 11:36AM
Yep, and we'll never need more than 256k of memory.
Paul @ Apr 10th 2008 12:50AM
Lets hope they update the camera on the iPhone too. That rarely gets mentioned - but as much as I love my iPhone the camera just sucks.
Version 1.0 @ Apr 10th 2008 12:58AM
I think the 3G iPhone is real. I am very very sure that it will be launched soon.
Gerry Altmann @ Apr 10th 2008 2:00AM
Two bridges: iPhone 2.0 and iTablet 1.0. the 3G iphone is likely to be more interesting not because it has 3G (which is useless for anyone who doesn't live in a major city) but because it will have small hardware/software tweaks based on nearly a year of public testing. The tablet will excite interest from anyone into mobile computing. Don't think enterprise - think schoolkids. The iPod and iPhone have done a great job of attracting migrants to Mac from Windows, but what better than a cheap tablet (with iPhone-like keyboard) for school? The two bridges go in the same direction because they use the same OS and both bridge areas that Apple has not traditionally served.
General Grant @ Apr 10th 2008 2:16AM
I think the 3G black iPhone with a smaller UI and sleeker like "the darkside" is the real deal. maybe not the photo but the concept is good-to-go.

Team Louish @ Apr 10th 2008 2:21AM
This doesn't sound right at all... 8 and 16, whatever. I would expect it to be 16gb and 32gb... or possibly even just one size like 32gb. Since the new 3g chip can support a higher megapixel, it would be nice to see that added to the camera, going from 2mb to 5mb. Id certainly hope video mode would be added, but since the processor speed isn't being increased, I'd doubt we'll see that. They need to throw a 2megapixel camera on the front for video conferencing and a 5 megapixel on the back.
I always thought it was stupid the Apple never made (from day 1) an Apple Bluetooth GPS device. They would of sold SOOOO many for pretty much any price they wanted.
Funke, Tobias Dr. @ Apr 10th 2008 4:26AM
I completely agree that they need a bluetooth GPS module. I would buy it if it included only 2 of these 3 things:
1. It relays location to Google Maps
2. It adds EXIF location data to iPhone camera pictures.
3. It logs location and time so that upon syncing, iPhoto can update EXIF location data for pictures taken on any camera based on their time stamp. (I am loath to use 3rd party software if I can help it)
Inclusion of that nifty clip from the 2nd gen. iPod Shuffle would also score .99 points.

One guy reports on rumor of Apple product out of boredom
Another guy reports on report of rumor
Another guy say he "thinks" that it will be on this date
Photoshop mock-up appears
Mock-up reported as possibly what the rumor will look like
Shill journalist reports on he thinks that it will come out on X date.
Another guy reports on reports from reports on reports of rumors.
Engadget says rumors pick up steam....Viola! Apple gets free press based on...bored Apple fans in need of keeping them in the news.
MJB @ Apr 10th 2008 2:18PM
& what have you done to douse the flames?
arif @ Apr 10th 2008 7:37PM
the new casing will be aluminum! waiting for 32GB 3G
Colin @ Apr 14th 2008 1:16PM
It's true. 3G iPhone this summer. An AT&T Rep. I was talking to readily admitted it. Who wants to donate their non-3G to a regular joe?
It makes sense. AT&T is opening more 3G markets. The buzz is apparent.
Jonathan @ Apr 15th 2008 3:07PM
AT&T reps know NOTHING about apple, much less how to run the network they belong to. I wish they would switch from AT&T, they are imbeciles.
