Sony announces PlayStation Eye webcam for PS3
Well it may not be the high-definition EyeToy HD IP webcam that gamers had been hoping for, but Sony has finally announced the (first?) official EyeToy for PS3, called simply the PlayStation Eye. With an array of four microphones, two zoom levels, and capture rate as high as 120fps, the Eye promises to deliver unprecedented cam-enhanced gameplay, although the VGA video resolution (and that's at 'only' 60fps) will probably nonetheless be a disappointment to some. Bundled in with the not-yet-priced package will be EyeCreate editing software, which allows users to add different effects to their content as well as record footage using time-lapse and slow-mo settings, among others. No word yet on other specs (still shot res?) or compatible games, either, but we imagine that a lot more info will trickle out as the Eye's planned summer release date grows nearer.
Update: Well what do you know, Sony and Hasbro also announced Eye of Judgment, the visual, interactive-card driven game they demoed at E3 last year. Good luck keeping people from printing out their own cards from the internet, guys. Should be out in Europe this summer, and the rest of the world this fall.

Wow. That is pretty ugly. It might be a good cam (I'm sure it is), but a little more time with working on the aesthetics wouldn't have hurt.
myscrnnm @ Apr 26th 2007 5:34PM
From an ergonomic standpoint, the design of the PlayStation Eye is superb.
cduran01 @ Apr 26th 2007 10:26AM
I agree its a little on the ugly side, but on the other hand, it looks pretty small so it wouldnt be extremely obvious.
I hope it gets a lot of software support, the EyeToy was a great inovation in gaming but it never got all the support it should've. Maybe this time around it will.
I'm going to get one though, looks like a good replacement for a headset as long as you can hear the other players voices through the standard speakers.

i'd be lying if i said it didn't remind me of the famous Johnny 5

Is this a joke? This thing looks horribly dated.
UhUhUh @ Apr 26th 2007 11:06AM
Now why doesn't MS or Nintendo make these too.
Moby Disk @ Apr 26th 2007 11:14AM
The eye-toy could have been the next Nintendo Wii if they bothered to invest any effort into it. Supposedly, they hired an ex-NASA expert who researched controlling humanoid robots via cameras. But they never used any of that technology. Sony could have been the frontrunners in physically interactive play. Instead, they released the eyetoy along with a few dumb games for it, then let it die. I have no reason to believe they won't do the same here.
If they were really serious, they will releas the eyeToy along with a light-saber battle game. Many geeks have made variations of this using PC webcams. Done professionally with a 120FPS camera this could be good. Instead, they will no doubt launch it with an enhanced version of Tetris and video email program that only works with other PS3s.
Esat @ Apr 26th 2007 11:26AM
Damn thats ugly. For crying out loud, why the hell didnt they incorporate the speaker as part of the base!?!? Look at this thing upside down, then *remove* the actual base. Surely that would make more frikkin sense???
Ablation @ Apr 26th 2007 11:40AM
Looks better than the one for the XBOX 360.
marc.federico @ Apr 26th 2007 11:55AM
useless
Geoffrey Sperl @ Apr 26th 2007 12:04PM
Wow. That's one fugly camera.
And the mounting is going to be an issue. If I can't easily mount it on my DLP and remove it - without adhesive or a permanent mounting frame of some sort - I'm not buying it.
LandMineHare @ Apr 26th 2007 12:06PM
Don't most gamers have their audio connected to, you know, something like a surround system or other sets of speakers? Are they trying to steal more ideas from the Wii by adding speakers to peripherals?
Zloi @ Apr 26th 2007 12:53PM
I suspect the grill on the top is the microphone array, not a speaker array. That doesn't negate the fact it could have worked below the camera as the base instead of on top as a hairstyle.
Darren Wilson @ Apr 26th 2007 12:51PM
Can't people read???
Quote from the second sentence of the article text!!!
"With an array of four microphones, two zoom levels, and capture rate as high as 120fps,"
The 'Afro' is NOT a fricking speaker!!!! It is the 4 microphones that are fitted to it (just like the original EyeToy had installed on it)......
xxdesmus @ Apr 26th 2007 1:37PM
That is one very ugly camera...wow.
Micah Neumark @ Apr 26th 2007 2:41PM
About a year ago, I had the pleasure of sitting in on a lecture given by the inventor of the eyeToy (he's pretty high up in SCE R&D). The things he showed us in the form of tech demos was amazing. If Sony knew what it was doing, it would emphasize that as a control method for many PS3 games. Using large brightly colored objects (like a pool noodle), you can control a sword, and similar activities. Sound familiar? Well, Nintendo may be going on a similar route to this, but Sony obviously doesn't care about the awesome work their own R&D team has done. Its a damn shame too...

This is the sweetest camera I have ever seen, idon't know what you are all talkin about. Imagine all the hours it took the developers to imagine this. All of you should be greatful to get Playstation Eye. Wii and Xbox 360 suck.

Good start. This is well on the way to making more games for the PS3 -- keep up good work and brilliant ideas.
