Reuters shocked that OLPC testers using XO for XXX
You know it's a pretty slow summer Friday on the Reuters news beat when one of the biggest stories making the rounds focuses on the shocking revelation that Nigerian students are using their shiny new OLPC XOs to do what hormonal young men have being doing since the dawn of time: look at naked women. The esteemed wire service's African correspondent breathlessly reports that a journalist from the News Agency of Nigeria had seen pornography on a few children's notebooks, which led the country's publication of record to surmise that "efforts to promote learning with laptops in a primary school in Abuja have gone awry as the pupils freely browse adult sites with explicit sexual materials." Why, the NAN report makes it sound like these kids are spending their days at some seedy adult bookstore and not even attending school at all. Luckily for the porn-addicted youngsters, administrators of the pilot program are aware of this snowballing crisis, and will soon be installing filters that will very likely block out a slew of legitimate pages while still allowing curious students to see all the flesh they want on Myspace. Will someone please think of the children?

I couldn't do anything more than lol when I read this and imagined at these kids typing "www.porn.com" on their green OLPC XD. Amateurs...j/k. But well, everything has a cost, and that's the cost of globalization I guess. Hope they do block it, they don't need something else to distract them from school.
Jongscx @ Jul 21st 2007 11:32PM
well, one way of looking at is:
If they're looking at virtual women, then at least they're not getting real one's pregnant... or worse...
L.Rawlins @ Jul 20th 2007 6:36PM
All hail the 'LubeTube'!
Kal-El @ Jul 20th 2007 6:40PM
It was only a matter of time...
paloooz @ Jul 20th 2007 6:43PM
On a more serious and off topic note... does anyone know where to get one of these? I'd love to get a hold of one of these OXs.
Ayle @ Jul 21st 2007 1:33PM
get a asus eeepc 701 it does the same thing and cost 200$
Wwhat @ Jul 21st 2007 2:18PM
Why? are you a starving kid in africa without a penny willing to put up with the worse laptop ever made? (albeit green)
Don @ Jul 23rd 2007 11:47AM
"How can I get one of these?"
Become depressingly poor.
Jason @ Jul 20th 2007 6:48PM
Now all they need is an external Seagate hard drive to store it all on!

Neil @ Jul 20th 2007 7:31PM
Of course. No one ever thought these would be used for downloading porn or sending out 419 scam spam.
venk @ Jul 20th 2007 7:34PM
Wait, we are giving Nigeria MORE computers?
OLPC - Training a New Generation of Nigerian Scammers and Porn Fiends.
Bosco @ Jul 20th 2007 7:40PM
Is there a pool anywhere on whether Napolean Negroponte will eventually have any discussions with MSNBC's Chris Hanson?
captainawesome @ Jul 20th 2007 8:03PM
Breaking News - Computers can be used to look at porn on the internet. More on this at 11.
rdrunner @ Jul 20th 2007 8:21PM
The pRon sites should be blocked. These computers are important educational and communication tools. The children should be taught to read and write in English well. I'm sick and tired of all the Nigerian emails I get with poor English.
Now with the OLPCs, we should get more emails that have proper grammar. That should make the world a better place.
Daryl Herbert @ Jul 21st 2007 12:16AM
Now we will get phishing spam from people claiming to be Nigerian porn stars
theone @ Jul 21st 2007 1:04PM
If you are getting scam emails with POOR ENGLISH...there are more chances they are not coming from Nigerian scammers...
strider_mt2k @ Jul 20th 2007 9:19PM
I hope this doesn't lead to rampant overpopulation.
Doh.
fe333 @ Jan 23rd 2008 9:16PM
What? What are you talking about? The world is already severely overpopulated.
Vince @ Jan 23rd 2008 11:41PM
Overpopulated?? Have you ever been to KANSAS?
I rest my case.

Wait, this is a good thing. Lets get these youngsters addicted to porn, too busy jacking off to try to pathetically scam us. Whoopee! : D

These things need to be recalled immediately and destroyed. But then again, it's to be expected. Everything that's supposedly designed to "help" our children ends up threatening their innocence instead. That's why I've kept my kids sealed in a concrete bunker for their entire lives. There they are protected from all the dangers of the outside world. No pornography, no vulgarity, no violence... not even any of those vile photons of light which enable them to see obscene things. Yes, my children will eventually see the world as they should - completely oblivious to any aspect of reality.
BrianC @ Jul 21st 2007 2:11AM
Mmmm. Would be great if people can donate the bandwidth charge to these people so that they can really watch the porn for free.
Alicia @ Jul 21st 2007 4:04AM
LoLZ.. it can be done better on this laptop either with more ease hehe

well we've had porn for ages and it hasn't turned out to be all that bad. Compared to all other countries without the benefit of porn.
texazzpete @ Jul 21st 2007 9:08AM
What's up with all these Nigerian-bashing comments? It isn't really a good things to generalize so recklessly. I'm nigerian and i make a good living legally, and there are lots more like me.
I'm willing to bet most of y'all get more emails promoting viagra and selling free 'sex enhancers' than any 419 emails. Last i checked, most spam mails come from the Western countries (with the US playing a major role there). You don't see me calling all Americans 'spammers'.
Ah, well. C'est la vie...
zorg @ Jul 21st 2007 9:37AM
Not that I pretend to speak for the Nobel Laureates who post on Engadget, but I think they are not talking about actual Nigerians.
There seems to be an incredibly mature and thoughtful tradition on blogs to purposely conflate terminology in posts with terminology familiar to the alleged insider community. I could cite examples of this from within the last 24 hours on more than one blog.
On the other hand, maybe my sarcastometer is so out of calibration that it fails to ping on your nom de guerre and charming colloquialisms / syntax errors.
Vinn @ Jul 21st 2007 12:03PM
Is that Jessica Rabbit?
I mean, that sucks, but seriously, who didn't see this coming?
Wwhat @ Jul 21st 2007 2:20PM
Sucks? what do you mean with that?
nick @ Jul 21st 2007 12:47PM
Any one catch the "snowballing" insinuation? lolz
Vinn @ Jul 21st 2007 8:53PM
@Wwhat
I mean it sucks cause they were meant for educational purposes, but they're (unsurprisingly) being used to surf porn.
I did not mean Jessica Rabbit sucks. Unless you mean literally.
Wwhat @ Jul 22nd 2007 10:53PM
I meant to say that the word 'sucks' is a bit overstated, the thing can still be used for education, just like your computer can regardless of your pr0n collection.
Why would it 'suck' that african kids have access to porn too like the rest of the world? seems a bit unfair.
Vinn @ Jul 23rd 2007 12:13AM
Okay, point taken.
Carl @ Jul 23rd 2007 3:49AM
Why would anyone censor a picture of Jessica Rabbit? She's a cartoon, ferchrissake.
Anonymous @ Jul 24th 2007 1:31PM
Well, what did you expect from these savages; to do homework and gain knowledge? No, these kids will continue to develop as they have; in a society where rape is common-place, AIDS is bountiuful, and porn is just an F9 away.
Also, sauce on that Jessica Rabbit picture
SilverGixxer @ Jan 24th 2008 12:09AM
Savages? Just a tad bit racist huh?

"Dry?" Other words popped to mind, but whatever.

Will someone please tell OLPC to filter out the "DIY: Pipe Bombs" sites too? We don't need that shit here.
