Unhappy Gateway shareholders sue over Acer's buyout
At this point we didn't know anyone still had strong feelings for Gateway, but never discount the power of cash to get those hearts a-beating: unhappy with the $710M Acer's paying for the company, two different groups of Gateway shareholders have filed suit, alleging that company executives should have held out for more scratch. Acer was planning using the Gateway acquisition to greatly expand its US presence, so it should be interesting to see how both companies react to these lawsuits -- and how much those shareholders thought Gateway was actually worth.

Pfft what's $170M in the scheme of things, anyway?

Dudes... it's $710M, not $170M. You swapped your numbers.

I thought that was a bit low... I still think Acer would be worth more.
Thanol @ Sep 13th 2007 8:17AM
Acer is worth more which is why they are BUYING Gateway, not the other way around.
Jeff Simons @ Sep 13th 2007 9:22AM
well actually they're right to do this in a way. Acer agreed to buy all stock for 1.90 when the stock was worth 1.30. When news of the buyout happened the stock shot up to about 1.85 and has been hovering between 1.80 and 1.90 since. this is where the grevience comes from. however suing is not the answer.
Thanol @ Sep 13th 2007 11:10AM
The stock only shot up because of the prospective buyout. If Acer pulls out, all those greedy stockholders will probably loose their paper gain, unless they bail out now.

I remember when it hit 80. I didn't sell. I am stupid.

i kinda hope gateway falls. i've bought 4 computers from them and had no problems, but just recently my brand new laptop from them is screwing up and they won't help me, even though its under complete warranty

Isn't Gateway affiliated with eMachines?.... Anyone?

Gateway bought out EMachines. So I guess Acer will own Gateway(US), Packard Bell(Europe), and EMachines(US)......
I wonder what this says for the future quality of gateway products? I've never owned anything acer. I do know that they are going to acquire (or have acquired?) packard bell, which sucked big time in the U.S. when they were sold here previously. Hopefully none of the Packard Bell BS will make it back to the U.S. market.
