Vii games: "free craps" indeed
The Wii reverse-engineering hat trick is now complete. The Vii clone just spat out a whole host of new games ready to slake your need for Happy Tennis and Alacrity Golf. Or maybe Fry Egg is more your style. No worries, plenty of options to choose from -- soon, in fact, judging by the pace of these leaks. Too bad your choice of Miis appears limited to a fluffy bunny or albino rat at this point.

Well, here is one possibility. The Wii console (as well as other stuff you are referring too) may be a bit too expensive for an average person in China (and MANY other countries as well). So what are they to do? How will they manage to spend that much on Vista, or Mac-Book, or Wii, or iPhone, or even DVD movies and who knows what ever else?
So, they have pirated movies, OS and other software, hardware and what not to meet their financial capabilities.
And don't even dream about MS and others being against this. They support it and its a fact! They KNOW that these people will NOT be able to buy their product legally so they provide them with the pirated version just to get them hooked. Think about MS for example. If they actually manage to destroy the pirated copies of Winblows what would all those people who cannot afford it do??? You guessed it, they would use Kubuntu, Ubuntu, Xubuntu or any other ...buntu there is for free and so, if their country EVER develops enough they will never again switch back to paying for something they get for free and they got used to. Same deal everywhere else, just have to look harder to come up with an example...

3. Copying and reverse engineering should not be confused with lacking inginuity. The Chinese companies are copying / reverse engineering because they lack financial resources, or they lack marketing skill, or both. But they are very innovative. You have any idea how difficult...how much inginuity goes into QUICKLY making knock-offs of phones and games?
4. This all being said... Chinese companies (not individuals) tend to lack originality and marketing sense IMHO.

All in all, it's not nice to call those knock-offs lame, but this IS lame.
Getting inspiration from other products is just fine, but selling Vii and iPohne, trying to fool people is just stupid, even if those people don't have the money for the real deal.
I'd have much more respect for those Chinese manufacturers, if they would just think of a unique name for their products, and stick to it.
Then they can build a brand and soon be as popular as the devices they try to copy. Because, *YES* they do have the expertise and ability to produce good devices quick.
But what they do is sad, and there's no reason to do it, except they know no better.

Through the deconstruction of a product, and subsequent analysis of its structure, function and operation, one can learn from others work and build upon it. This leaves the possibility of further development of the product, however, you are taking the research and development of another as your own. In most cases, these companies simply stuffing a cloned body of a competitor with lower cost parts to undercut their prices, then adding a poorly developed OS/UI layer on top.

- That is a generalization. There are many companies in China who specialize in knocking off competitors products, but that is a reality of life in China. What I was referring to in my response was specifically those companies. we shouldnt be judging the chinese by the 'knock-off' products profit-orientated companies are producing. theres the really good, high quality original products, and then the really low quality, knock off products in china, theres a large gap between high and low. it all depends on what price you're willing to pay and how much $ you've got in our wallet. who says you cant buy an original wii in china?.

I don't think when someone says "Chinese cheap knockoffs" they speak for China as a whole. Yea, we do realise something like 80% of the world electronics are made there, including the popular (the real ones) brand.
I have a Lenovo laptop.
I'm not sure how this excuses some wanna-be companies from producing this stuff. And it's pure waste, since if they can produce cheap knockoffs, then they have the knowledge and technology and experience to make their own products. They just don't do it for "just so" reasons. The clone concept is stuck into their mentality.

The name "Nikon" was believed to be "Nippon Ikon", copied from Zeiss Ikon of Germany, maker of the original Contax rangefinder cameras (i.e. not SLR). Nikon copied the Contax lens mount, too, but they were not 100% compatible.
Ironic thing is that you will find some Nikon rangefinders command higher prices than Contax rangefinders on the market.
The name "Canon" came from "Kwanon", a buddhist deity. (Kwun Yum brand camera!!??)
