AgfaPhoto's DV-5000G camera plays games, falls short of potential
AgfaPhoto -- you know, the company that used to just make really high-end gear, but now lends its name to lame sauce stuff built by plawa -- has a new camera on display at PMA, the DV-5000G. In addition to the regular 5 megapixel camera duties, this thing works overtime as a 720 x 480 video camera -- there's 64MB of built-in memory, but we're guessing you'll want to hop to SD or SDHC in a hurry. Of course, most cameras do full-res video, but AgfaPhoto is also pulling a page out of DXG's book and packing in video games, playable on the 3-inch "960 x 240" screen (we're guessing that's a typo, and this thing is standard 320 x 240 QVGA). Unfortunately, the games are super weak, and there are no emulators in sight. We don't think PMP or webcam functionality is going to save this one either, and the $260 pricetag seems a bit silly for what you're getting. Let's catch up at next year's PMA, huh Agfa?

Nokia N93i anyone?

960x240 (they are counting the R-G-B pixels individually (320x3=960)... not a typo but deceptive as I've seen a few other companies do the same)

960x240 isn't a typo. It's a marketing gimmick to make the resolution sound higher than it really is.
In reality (where the rest of us live), they're counting each of the red green and blue subpixels that make up the horizontal pixel count of a color LCD panel.
NEOne @ Jan 31st 2008 6:09PM
When they say 960 x 240 they are counting the red, green and blue elements of each pixel separately. If you count sub-pixels you can say it is a 960x240 screen but in real world use it is a 320x240 RGB display.

No, 960 is not a typo. 320 pixels * 3 (R, G, B) = 960. They're technically correct, but obviously misleading. I hate when digital camera companies do that.

Wait, what? The comments didn't show before. Whatever

Yeah, comments were borked for a while there... Replies seem to be borked now...

I don't think 960x240 is terribly misleading. I think most people who are familiar with resolutions and what they look like would, first of all, notice that 4:1 is a pretty crazy aspect ratio, and second, know that a "pixel" can mean either a dot, the smallest element of the image, or a group of dots that makes up any color when combined. Yes, we assume that a color display will typically have three times the "pixels" of a monochrome display of the same resolution, but I wouldn't call it lying, rather, simply stating the specs in the most impressive way legal. Did they mention anything about a color screen? If not, they are being more accurate by not implying groups of pixels used with color displays.
BTW, I can't remember where I saw this, but on another cheap camera website somewhere I actually saw a "4x zoom" quoted, which was "1x optical plus a 3x digital" zoom. Seriously. :)
