We saw a few clever products at
Toy Fair 2008 designed to get kids up and active, but none so nefarious -- and cute -- as Swinxs. The "toy" is basically a talking computer with an RFID reader, that guides kids through different pre-loaded games or stories. The kids wear RFID wrist bracelets that identify them in the game, and let them interact with the machine. We heard, from a reliable source, that if kids engage in this type of "running around" in "grassy areas" they very well may die, but that's all hearsay. Once kids grow tired of the included games they can download and install more over USB, and there's a free SDK for developers to create new entertainment for Swinxs. No word on a price or release date, but hopefully we'll be seeing more of this one as time progresses. Video is after the break.
[Editor's note: No kids have been known to die from running on the grass. Ever.]

Die? wtf? first post?
derX @ Feb 18th 2008 11:04PM
Yes, the first person to post and to acknowledge such by saying "first" (yes, questions count as saying first, slickster) dies.
Cruel fact of life, but that's the blogosphere for you. As a consolation prize, you'll be receiving one of these odd, talking, green things.

...and an HD DVD player...

If they're lucky, they'll find a Chansey.

Adam @ Feb 18th 2008 10:10PM
i feel like lots of kids are going to trip, fall, skin their knees, whack each other in the faces, knock out teeth (they're only baby teeth i guess) and have parents that file lots of lawsuits. hurray for kids doing physical activity
james @ Feb 18th 2008 10:13PM

I'm trying to decide what the "nipple" is.
drsilverworm @ Feb 21st 2008 12:36AM
First thing I saw. Didn't even read the post, went straight to comments to see if I was the only one
Dolemite @ Feb 18th 2008 11:55PM
No offense to you guys, but, if you can imagine a " huge boob" in a picture full of kids playing, or get off because of the same picture, just do what Dennis Miller said. That is to say, just do humanity a favor and kill yourselves. Please.
Thanks.
Sirius @ Feb 19th 2008 12:11AM
The 'boob' on the left is the girl's exposed knee on the sand.. the one on the right (the one with the 'nipple') is her right shoulder with the tip of a shadow in the wrong place at the wrong time... (shadow of her thumb probably)
I thought Engadget was supposed to be family safe?
Sabrina @ Feb 18th 2008 10:24PM

Andrew @ Feb 18th 2008 10:41PM
SWINXS???? Reminds me of the Futurama episode where there's only two words left that aren't trademarked.
TheTupa @ Feb 18th 2008 10:43PM
You are referring to Swinxs, and PsychoKiller

Big Brother learns how to play Simon Says... tracking bracelets and computer control seriously is this training for the shape of things to come???
ByronGman @ Feb 18th 2008 11:03PM
OOOOOHhhhhh there's a free SDK?
I can see some potential for developing some "adult" games with this thing... if you get my drift...
derX @ Feb 18th 2008 11:06PM
xDD
Same thing I thought as soon as I read about the SDK.
And it can accomodate a group, too. Sure to make things interesting.
DarkLightConnection @ Feb 18th 2008 11:16PM
Yeah, that's what I thought too....
Something tells me that there will be more hackers than kids looking at this when it hits the stores
Sirius @ Feb 19th 2008 12:13AM
Heh.. for every child that this toy lures outside, the SDK keeps another at the computer...
CaliforniaKid @ Feb 18th 2008 11:11PM
Follow up product: Spanx! Spank your kids and watch them behave. Batteries not included.
Hammond X @ Feb 18th 2008 11:17PM
I remember back when I was a kid we used to have "outside". It was tough on us, though, because we were so poor we couldn't even afford feet. We had to play on our stumps.
StrangeBum @ Feb 18th 2008 11:38PM
This comment was either very bad, or just plain awesome.
I'm going with just plain awesome, not sure why, but it gave me a nice laugh.
Game_playa @ Feb 18th 2008 11:35PM
Its the Freaking Knee! LOL
temugen @ Feb 18th 2008 11:45PM
Those kids look like a bunch of retards trying to hump a doorknob!
MrGuru @ Feb 18th 2008 11:47PM

Huzzah!
Fatherhood can be outsourced at last.
No more need for "fun" with those pesky kids.
Back to the carefree 20 hour days of my youth.
Just as soon as ByronGMan has sorted out something for the wife...
ScooterDe @ Feb 19th 2008 7:11AM
you were short-changed. Days had 24 hours when I was a youth.
HkU @ Feb 19th 2008 4:06AM
Releasedate is in April, price will be €150
How I know this? Our school (Art Academy Utrecht) has been approached to make a few games for it, and we've been given the low-down in the initial presentation
master_sword @ Feb 19th 2008 8:16AM
maybe i'm just really immature, but i think it looks like fun...or maybe i havent played a good game of "tag" in a while
jopperdeflop @ Feb 19th 2008 9:25AM
I agree; it looks pretty cool...I think it's interesting to see these new kinds of consoles that allow kids to be physically active (like the Wii)! And I like the idea of creating your own games.
theprimeminister @ Feb 20th 2008 4:54PM
Children playing outside - isn't that so 1960s, like? That is, if it weren't so 1984 Bog Brither d'you know what I mean God I'm into literature-style? But then I played outside in the 1980s. When the C64 overheated, anyway.
It nearly makes me want to have kids myself. Go Swinxs!
