BusinessWeek reports iPhone SDK will be late
With seven days left in the month to announce the iPhone SDK, BusinessWeek is reporting that a reliable source has it that Apple will be delaying officially sanctioned 3rd party apps, making it late by between one to three weeks. Yes, it would absolutely suck -- but there's always Ziphone.

LOL...funny enough, that was my exact reaction. :-)

THEY LIE!!!
Austin @ Feb 23rd 2008 12:05AM
Disclamer: Arik Hesseldahl does not own AAPL. Yet.
Isaac @ Feb 23rd 2008 12:14AM
Screw that. I lost my jail break for some good 3rd party apps.
Jason @ Feb 23rd 2008 12:14AM
If this keeps the macbook pro from updating, I'm probably going to kill myself. I've been waiting for so long for it to do so, I had a four hour dream last night about finally ordering it. And that's overwhelmingly sad.
Reid @ Feb 23rd 2008 12:42AM
I don't get the connection between the iPhone SDK and the Macbook Pro refresh. You mean just if there are any shared resources between the two? I'd guess that's not the case, but who knows.
Just buy a Macbook Pro already. *that's* how you'll know when the refresh happens. It'll be the day after. :)
waiownsyou @ Feb 23rd 2008 2:21AM
My theory is that they're delaying the MBP refresh to prevent a Mac Geek Riot because of all the people who bought one on October 26th like myself. I have my sword here.
It's probably just going to be the same thing with a multitouch trackpad, Penryn, and some minor changes like getting rid of that magnetic latch.
monkfishbandana @ Feb 23rd 2008 4:35AM
@ waiownsyou
You mean adding that magnetic latch? Getting rid of the *mechanical* latch.
Brendan Sheehan @ Feb 23rd 2008 3:46PM
That's funny monkfishbandana, but the new MacBook Pro will get more than a magnetic latch [and better damn well get that]. Updated outer enclosure [damn well needs one], Air-like keyboard [way better than Pro's current keyboard], LED backlight display [on the 17"], large trackpad with those extra gestures, even thinner and possibly lighter, faster processor, better graphics card, and a SSD option?
lanejasper69 @ Feb 23rd 2008 4:12PM
If you were sleeping there is no way to tell how long a dream is/was, most freams although they seem to go all night, happen in just minutes...the duration that is....FYI. I read that somewhere, not trying to get up in your "dream Grill" LOL, good luck on the Mac Book Pro!!

Joey Geraci @ Feb 23rd 2008 5:53PM
You have got to be kidding about them replacing the current nice MBP with the craptacular MB one. They are stupid idiots running that company, but they aren't that stupid.
Longhorn @ Feb 23rd 2008 12:15AM
well, it already was late.
not much surprise there from consumer-hating cashthirsty apple.
i have an iphone but i hate apple.
ChrisG @ Feb 23rd 2008 12:20AM
We were promised that the sdk would be hear around February, way back in November, and it wasn't really mentioned at MacWorld, so I'm pretty sure that the sdk was bound to be late. I'm rather apathetic about this, I mean you should only be sad and bawling right now if you haven't jailbroken your iPhone or iTouch.
Reid @ Feb 23rd 2008 12:47AM
Or even not. I did the 1.1.1 jailbreak and played with a few apps but never really got any use out of anything, so I applied 1.1.2 knowing it would break my jailbreak.
Honestly, I haven't missed it.
I don't doubt I'll love some of the third-party apps once they're available, but I just use it for what it is and never have to worry about the thing flaking out or a software update whacking my apps. That's why I bought an iPhone. If I wanted something I had to worry about crashing all the time, I'd have kept my WM5 phone.
phanbouy @ Feb 23rd 2008 12:54AM
all i ever wanteded since kindergarten is a cut and paste mod.
but yeah i have 1.1.1 JB and i hardly use any of the extras. i finally tried voice notes but it crashed my phone -- the only app to blatantly due so thus far. don't really need file management stuff personally; too clunky and hax0ry anyway. thought being able to customize the springboard is nice... i mean who needs stock.app you glorified gamblers? =)
ChrisG @ Feb 23rd 2008 1:39AM
well after seeing the dev teams accomplishments and ZiPhone, iBrickr, iFuntastic and other apps, I don't really worry about the updates. However I digress, in my past statement I wasn't implying that we don't need an sdk from Apple, but that jailbreakers don't have to worry too much about it being delayed.
James Yopp @ Feb 23rd 2008 1:54AM
I'll second that. Apart from the book reader application and some Summerboard themes that I designed myself (http://jyopp.com/iphone.php), I haven't come across anything really compelling from the third-party apps so far.
I'm working on an application myself that should have broad appeal, but I'm kind of letting it languish. It will be advantageous for it to sync with the desktop, which is one thing I won't be able to do without the official SDK and docs. I don't want to choose one kind of database and then find out it won't work with the iSync conduits, or find out that Apple is adding Core Data support with the SDK update.
Khris @ Feb 23rd 2008 12:20AM
Colour me surprised!
AutoTom @ Feb 23rd 2008 12:21AM
isnt it already oh... a year late?
Charles @ Feb 23rd 2008 12:51AM
the iPhone has only been out for 8 months
Reid @ Feb 23rd 2008 12:49AM
Well played, sir.
AutoTom @ Feb 23rd 2008 12:54AM
@CharlesCharles
exactly..? software in time for iphone launch?
stupidnoduhdude @ Feb 23rd 2008 12:36AM
Still waiting on my new MBP, at this point I've lost hope for my iPhone and bought an N95-3 simply because I don't believe Apple is the least bit dependable when it comes to crap like this.
So what's it gonna be Mr. Jobs? Jan...Feb..March...later? By the time this SDK is out, it's anyone's guess that the 3G iPhone will be as well (I overexaggerate, but really...this is getting annoying).
Jake @ Feb 23rd 2008 9:29AM
Dude, it's only 1 to 2 weeks.
Khris @ Feb 23rd 2008 10:32AM
Ironically, you included the phrase "crap like this" in your post.
iPriest @ Feb 23rd 2008 1:15AM
I hope Steve won't pull a vista on us.
John Doe. @ Feb 23rd 2008 12:54PM
You mean a Leopard don't you?
fuzi @ Feb 23rd 2008 2:51AM
nah, leopard wasn't delayed as long as vista. vista/longhorn was first previewed in 2003, and finally released (after they started from scratch again) in 2007. it was 2 years late at least.
blinkcowz182 @ Feb 23rd 2008 2:57AM
It used to be if Apple announced something ahead of time, they always delivered early (Tiger, switch to Intel, etc) . Not sure if they achieved the goals early or if they set the time longer than anticipated so they looked good but I'd much rather Apple set the date out 3 months later and then ship it "early" than the seemingly painful trend of announcing a date and then pushing it back.
iPriest @ Feb 23rd 2008 3:47AM
@John Doe: I hope he pulls a leopard instead of a vista on us. 2 to 3 weeks without removing promised features is okay but 4 years and remove half of the intended features would really be a disgrace.
sam @ Feb 23rd 2008 12:17PM
well we're still waiting for the "revolutionary secret features" steve promised for leopard, but didn't publish so that "microsoft couldn't xerox them". or maybe they are in leopard 1.5.2, but no-one knows about them because they're still top secret?
Jon Doe. @ Feb 23rd 2008 1:03PM
And still Leopard is/was buggy as hell, IMHO as bad as Vista. At least on Vista I didn't have to reboot to get fucking wireless to work. (Which is still an issu with even 10.5.2) At least on vista I wasn't having issues with crashing when I changed wifi 2 Ethernet, changed the location and bam....instant and perm lockup. I removed Leopard and installed Vista /w RC SP1.
I'm so damn sick of you fucking fanbois. You NEVER take Apple to task for any of their failures. Is it any wonder why QC has dropped substantially over the last 7 years? You fanbois tolerate shit from them and they know it
iPriest @ Feb 23rd 2008 2:03PM
Less buggy than Vista and i don't need to reboot to get onto wifi. Maybe you should try Leopard on a mac instead of trying to run it on a dell.
Ian @ Feb 23rd 2008 3:02AM
3rd party apps like the rumoured tomtom would float my boat.
ron @ Feb 23rd 2008 4:52AM
Trolls are so totally into spam. Hey, whatever floats your boat: 17news@gmail.com
Andrew @ Feb 23rd 2008 6:55AM
No!!!!!!
Another 3 weeks, stuck to the Mac, what am i going to do?!?!
Lol
I think i shall play some sport and dream of my iPod touch having many apps!
woop woop
If you think about it, evrything for Apple has been a bit late =/, im not dissin them.
Jake E. @ Feb 23rd 2008 10:23AM
Ever heard of jailbreaking your iPod?..
Chris McDonald @ Feb 23rd 2008 7:13AM
On Tuesday 26th Feb, the exciting new release will be a new beige colour for the iPod Shuffle.
vdogg89 @ Feb 23rd 2008 8:10AM
so i have a question. is the sdk apps going to be free? im considering getting the iphone when they release this, but im not going to pay for any programs
Chuck @ Feb 23rd 2008 9:13AM
I think some will be free, and you'll have to pay for some. It should be like any other platform, like Windows Mobile or Palm OS.
ma5t3rw1tt @ Feb 23rd 2008 10:04AM
Great, more waiting.
Zach @ Feb 23rd 2008 11:26AM
I love a lot of what mac does, but how they lock down the iPhone just makes me laugh. However, I've just bought a sprint mogul now and when combined with EV-DO (soon to be rev A) and the Skyfire browser (when it comes out shortly) it will more than be a match for the iPhone (well, in some ways, in features it will kick it's butt). That will keep me for another year till Android comes out and mops the floor with all the Operating Systems on the market.
Chris @ Feb 23rd 2008 11:57AM
This is why people jailbreak their iphones/ipod touch I don't want to pay apple. I'd rather donate to the people who make awsome apps for free.
guerilla779 @ Feb 23rd 2008 12:40PM
im so sorry engadget....watcha guys gonna do for 7 more days.
i guess maybe bore us to death with 70 posts about apples future plans?
austin @ Feb 23rd 2008 12:59PM
no. 70 posts about HD DVD dying
guerilla779 @ Feb 23rd 2008 1:38PM
yeah man........dude this site for some reason has a habit of holding on to things and shredding it into 70 pieces !!!
lanejasper69 @ Feb 23rd 2008 4:20PM
@ "austin" and "guerilla779: (lamers btw..)
okay sssho%#s, if you don't like the Engadget posts about Apple (I'm not a fan boy, either) don't come here!!! it's THAT simple! You must be stupid...obviously!
You could be spending your valuable (doubhtful) time browsing the web somewhere else instead of bashing all their efforts. Better yet, get off (or on actually) your lame asses and create your own website, then you can moderate thousands of posts and strip out everything that only YOU don't want to read about.
bunch of babies, what are you 2 years old?
Faslane Out!

I love my iPhone, buy my buddy has a VZW XV6800 with some pretty cool apps. He was showing me his Slingbox portal a week or so ago, it was awesome. He was watching the TV signal from his house on his phone. My iPhone has a better ipod/music player functionality then his PDA, but he did have some really cool stuff. All in all, it really illustrated to me how much the iPhone was closed off by restricting 3rd party apps. 3G would help things like the Slingbox app, and I knew that I'd be missing out on that from the onset. But Apple needs to loosen up if they expect to stay competitive. My advice is that they better get the SDK out relatively soon, enable A2DP, contract a 3rd party to create a GPS fob to plug into the bottom, get better integration with Google apps (good start with Gmail, not do the same with Google Calender), and not be such a pain in the ass when working with other 3rd party developers/manufacturers. If they keep moving along with the chip on their shoulder like they have been, I can say that the iPhone will be the last piece of Apple hardware I buy.
