35mm slide viewer hacked to enhance iPod nano viewing
If you just so happen to have a spare 35mm slide viewer gathering all sorts of dust in your basement and one of Apple's latest nanos, we've discovered a perfect way to spend your weekend and exercise your DIY muscle. Granted, the Nanoscope has been around the block a time or two, but that doesn't weaken its geek factor one iota. Essentially, you simply modify said viewer to accommodate the nano, add in a set of speakers and kick back to enjoy your stored movie files in larger-than-originally-intended fashion. Really, it's way cooler than it sounds -- check out the video after the jump.

Good find, dude. It's bad enough this is old, but these guys aren't even reading their own blog.
Spyvie @ Mar 2nd 2008 1:25AM
The whole idea is stolen from the CRTs in the movie Brazil
Josh Warner @ Mar 2nd 2008 5:31AM
You gotta give them some credit though - Engadget dupes VERY rarely. Take Slashdot as another example... FAR worse duping.
Ahmed Alzayani @ Mar 2nd 2008 11:24AM
still ....
LiQuiD_FuSioN @ Mar 2nd 2008 11:33AM
Hey, at least it was made by a different person. It'd be even funnier if it was the same guy, lol.
Mike Jenkins @ Mar 2nd 2008 12:31PM
Nope, it was the same guy.
riggs @ Mar 2nd 2008 1:18AM
wouldnt buying a different player be a better solution?
mushrooshi @ Mar 2nd 2008 1:24AM
This is a cool trick, but I don't see it being very practical, since:
If you wanna view on a big screen at home, us an AV dock or watch on computer.
And if you plan on using this portably... well firstoff, Portable slide viewer is an oxymoron...
But still neat.
fischju @ Mar 2nd 2008 1:53AM
Maybe if it upscaled the resolution to something that didn't make my eyes bleed it would be ok.
LOs @ Mar 2nd 2008 1:21AM
First of all, nice double post.
Secondly, I agree with riggs, if the screen is too small buy a zune, or somethign from creative or iRiver.
Thirdly, this wouldn't so much qualify as a hack, more as a mod.
maybe a Hackjobs the ugly stepsister of buyer's remorse.
LOs @ Mar 2nd 2008 1:22AM
and re-reading that it makes absolutely no sense.
fischju @ Mar 2nd 2008 2:33AM
Or Archos, who have an 800x480 4.3" device out.
uberlemurguy @ Mar 2nd 2008 7:22AM
yep, it just bought one. owns everything else except a 72" 1080p Plasma that fit in your pocket.
Grant @ Mar 2nd 2008 12:42PM
or just an ipod touch, which would probably give you about the same size viewing area as the slide viewer... and more storage.
Byzil Mystwing @ Mar 2nd 2008 1:24AM
LOL Engadget, always behind! I saw this on Engadget months ago!
madwh @ Mar 2nd 2008 2:02AM

Dude not all of us read the entire internets, some of us only read one blog. Oh wait...
hp540 @ Mar 2nd 2008 1:35AM
what is this? a viewer for ANTS?
It has to be at least....THREE TIMES BIGGER THAN THIS
Richard Lai @ Mar 2nd 2008 1:36AM
I smell management issue in Engadget here...
Big John @ Mar 2nd 2008 1:49AM
This just in: bloggers are human, occasionally make mistakes.
riggs @ Mar 2nd 2008 1:55AM
epic post.
mushrooshi @ Mar 2nd 2008 2:20AM
In addition, 4% of American men admit to wearing thongs.
Sam Winter @ Mar 2nd 2008 6:50PM
Yeah, but seriously, how long can it possibly take to search the archives before writing a post? 10 seconds? The older article even comes up in the "RELATED" section for god sakes!
Big John @ Mar 2nd 2008 6:58PM
@Sam: Are you honestly *that* offended by the dupe? I doubt it.
Dave @ Mar 2nd 2008 1:55AM
Engadget is the new Slashdot...
highjumpman @ Mar 2nd 2008 2:09AM
Reminds me of those old gameboy-magnifiers!
mushrooshi @ Mar 2nd 2008 2:17AM
My sister actually has one of those.
It sucked playing with a pink GBA non-SP. Why couldn't she pick unisex white... or purple. It was the "ITS UNISEX" color purple.
tumnasgt @ Mar 2nd 2008 6:17AM
I was thinking that this looked familiar, and what do you know, I saw it on engadget already.
Though, this is the first double post I've ever seen on engadget, so I won't be too nasty.
skulldriveshaft @ Mar 2nd 2008 8:42PM
but why?
since you would have to encode the video on a computer that should have a larger screen.
you're supposed to kick back and enjoy your stored movie files?
then again holding the nano to one eye doesn't help.
RideTi @ Mar 2nd 2008 10:03PM
Surely some of you remember the beamscope? From the early 80s? A big lens you parked in front of your tv to make the picture bigger, but only for one viewer, sitting dead center, who might make it through one sitcom before the inevitable massive headache? Yes, this was before Brazil.
Shmapple @ Mar 3rd 2008 2:49PM
The Engadget Hierarchy
Step 1. Post significant Apple news.
Step 2. Post insignificant Apple news.
Step 3. Post reruns of said Apple news.
Step 4. Sprinkle in very significant news from all other companies from time to time.
