Everex's $400 VA1500V laptop now available
If the bargain priced Cloudbook was just a touch too small for your tastes, open wide for Everex's 15.4-inch VA1500V. Available now at NewEgg, this 5.3-pound rig features a 1.5GHz VIA C7-M processor, WXGA+ (1,440 x 900) resolution panel, half a gig of DDR2 RAM, a 60GB 5400RPM hard drive, DVD combo drive and a lackluster integrated graphics set. As expected, you'll also find the firm's gOS v2 "Rocket" operating system, an Ethernet port, 802.11b/g WiFi, three USB ports, VGA out, audio in / out and a 3-cell Li-ion sure to last an eternity. Still, you can't kvetch too loudly for $399.99, now can you?

This could very well be the cheapy windows laptop I buy to supplement my Mac.
Sounds pretty promising.
technophobe @ Mar 4th 2008 10:06AM
It's not a windows laptop
Khris @ Mar 4th 2008 10:09AM
....until you install Windows on it.
Derek McNelly @ Mar 4th 2008 10:47AM
I know, I plan on installing Win 2k or XP on it.
Nick @ Mar 4th 2008 11:33AM
Save yourself some time and make sure that the hardware used in this thing has windows drivers.
Evan @ Mar 4th 2008 1:41PM
XP will crawl on the VIA processor.
JohnTitor @ Mar 4th 2008 6:05PM
it looks like my Medison Celebrity
it'll be here any day!
tracy @ Mar 5th 2008 2:11PM
im using that processor right now with XP and its not crawling. its fine if your not into playing games. gimp, openoffice, googleearth etc.
Patriks7 @ Mar 4th 2008 10:03AM
how thick is it? :x
superfresh @ Mar 4th 2008 10:21AM
that's what she said.
rock99rock @ Mar 4th 2008 4:50PM
Classic
Derrick @ Mar 4th 2008 10:03AM
that's a surprisingly high resolution on that monitor. i expected the standard 1280x800. at least something on that thing is worth some money.
technophobe @ Mar 5th 2008 4:15AM
@Khris
obviously you can install windows on it, but I thought the whole point of getting a laptop with linux would be that you wanted a laptop with linux
Bamboo @ Mar 4th 2008 10:20AM
Yeah your right. If it was 299 I would def buy it, but its 399. i would just spend an extra 50-100 bucks and get a dell vostro 1500 with c2d and 1 gig ram.
FRZ @ Mar 4th 2008 10:30AM
Only if it was smaller. I once own a 15" laptop and swear to never buy another. And I take swearing very, very seriously since that's like against my religion.
John Johnson @ Mar 4th 2008 10:32AM
My mom has a cheap Everex just like this with the VIA, but it came with Vista. I'd have paid extra for it to come without :P.
Nothing a copy of XP and some extra RAM didn't fix. It works, but not a great multitasker.
Compute Onthego @ Mar 4th 2008 10:37AM
Is that set of specs and price for REAL!?
Wow.
Wow.
Uh...wow.
Does it come in blue?
johnny5 @ Mar 4th 2008 1:01PM
I love it... even the most impressed of you has a nitpick that has to be posted. With all the choices we have now, why complain that something isn't the one you want? We're never happy because everything has to be EXACTLY what WE want.
Back in my day, they hadn't invented colors. We got beige and we were happy with it!
Sureno Problemkid @ Mar 4th 2008 1:07PM

Ahem...you wouldn't happen to be familiar with 10-year-old girls who ask Dad for a laptop as long as it's blue, huh?
Fenway Beer Man @ Mar 4th 2008 10:42AM
Not worth it. I got my 5.8 lb C2D laptop with Vista premium and 1 gig of Ram for $350.
Bamboo @ Mar 4th 2008 10:49AM
Wow was it a black friday deal or somthing?
Spyvie @ Mar 4th 2008 1:16PM
right
Fenway Beer Man @ Mar 4th 2008 1:31PM
ya... it was actually advertised as $300 but Circuit city pulled a bait and switch and added $50 for their "firedog optimization" - they said they only had one in stock that wasn't optimized (after I waited in line for 11 hours)
mb67 @ Mar 4th 2008 11:30AM
Bamboo:
It wasn't Black Friday, it was black market. :p
SOOPERGOOMAN @ Mar 4th 2008 11:32AM
One question:
WILL IT BLEND?
Bamboo @ Mar 4th 2008 11:41AM
YES, and snap!
STrRedWolf @ Mar 4th 2008 11:32AM
OH YES I CAN!
It's a VIA C7-M, aka a Pentium 2 class processor with extra bits (MMX, SSE) stuck on it. It uses integrated graphics, which I bet is VIA's own IGP, and are only good for 2D work. And 1440x900?!? I can get a much better laptop USED for $400 at a pawn shop -- a Dell Inspiron 5160 for instance. A P4 with NVidia Geforce MX 5-series graphics that's powerful enough to play Portal.
And for the same price as a Cloudbook?!?
kaban @ Mar 4th 2008 11:41AM
It has "Foxfire" though!
MarkZ @ Mar 4th 2008 11:46AM
Finally a machine to compete with the Eee PC for worst laptop ever made!
Scott @ Mar 4th 2008 12:39PM
My local walmart has been selling a $398 vista laptop for about 6 months now. Its not the best in the world but it gets a 2.8 on the vista rating scale. dont know the exact specs but something like celeron, 1gig ram, 80gig hd, cdrw/dvd 14.1 screen vista home basic
Montusama @ Mar 4th 2008 3:44PM
I want a Via computer but i think I'll wait until their new Isiash core's are out....you know the ones that they say will totally own silverthrone
Frank @ Mar 4th 2008 5:44PM
If I bought that machine, I would install Ubuntu. gOS sucks windows' penis.
Steve C. @ Mar 4th 2008 10:26PM
Appears to be the Zonbu Notebook without the Zonbu service.
ajvenom @ Mar 25th 2008 6:03PM
For that kind of money it should have included windows xp or nock off a hundred.
ajvenom @ Mar 25th 2008 9:08PM
Well since I have a copy of xp sp2, the linux based OS went bye bye. Once upgraded online at MS the only driver I needed was an XP audio driver.
Not knowing the name of the driver I needed, I found it hard to find technical specs right away. I decided to call the Everex "Tech. Support" from the number on the bottom of my newly purchased machine that includes 1 year support and limited parts warranty. They were no help. I bought a Gbook (GO2 linux based OS) and they would not answer XP questions unless it was preinstalled. Whether or not I bought an Gbook should be irrelevant...I wanted know the name of audio system. "Hello your in hardware not software business...well if you want to cut your own throat go ahead."
SO THE FINE PEOPLE AT HEWLETT PACKARD HELPED ME OUT------> NOW THIS I WILL REMEMBER!!!!!
The Device: VIA VT1708A Vinyl High-Definition Audio Codec
The Windows XP SP2 Driver: Via High Definition Audio driver 6.0.01.1240.
Just look for self installing version (like the one at HP) to set up the device and then install driver manually through device manager.
