ZX Spectrum Laptop mashes in a Toshiba Libretto 110 for some fun retro times
Let's not get hung up on trying to figure out a use for this thing, and just admire it for what it is: awesome. Jim built this "Spectrum ZX Laptop" out of an old ZX Spectrum 48k and a Toshiba Libretto 110, using the Libretto for innards and the screen, while the Spectrum serves as a case and keyboard. The "laptop" gets a couple hours of batter life, and naturally Jim is running Linux on here -- he plans to emulate some old ZX Spectrum games with it, but mostly it's just art. A shot of the two machines in their original states is after the break.

@mushrooshi +1 for that.
Thank you, now that we have every cliche out of the way, perhaps we can get on to what the comment should really be about: discussing the article and giving this guy mad props for extreme modding.

I hope that spectrum was already dead before he did this, ive heard they fetch a pretty penny.
Chip @ Mar 21st 2008 10:31AM
Are you serious? I was storing mine in a box in the garage when the box overflowed and the ZX fell out and wifey ran over it.

Gah I wish I could rate your entire profile down. This is the second time I've seen you post about blending and a link to go with (which is most likely a lame attempt at a rickroll).
SimonRichards @ Mar 21st 2008 12:51AM
I was going to give you the thumbs down, but I thought, ill click the link, and what I found, was truly epic. I thank you. And I gave you thumbs up.
SimonRichards @ Mar 21st 2008 12:53AM
Yes im aware there are no thumbs here. I spend too much time on youtube.

I have a Libretto 100 ... sweet machine. Needs a new battery, though. I still use it like a pda -- manages my calendar and todo list; has a wifi card so I can keep up on email or google random stuff on the go.

Do you still lose your whole program if you touch the ZX with out grounding yourself first...goodtimes.

Such a waste of a perfectly good Spectrum. Where do you keep the cassette player?
larry Friedman @ Mar 21st 2008 7:20PM
>>...Where do you keep the cassette player?
You have to use the Remote-Casette™ feature.
Aizen @ Mar 21st 2008 7:00AM
Doom runs natively on Linux, infact any ID-software game runs natively on Linux, aka. Doom, Doom II, Doom III, Quake, Quake 2, Quake 3, Quake 4, Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, Wolfenstein 3D, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory. There's no need for wine.
But to answer the question, no it can't run doom as the CPU is not supported nor fast enough, Doom requires a 386 cpu at 33 MHz, the Spectrums Z80 @ 3.5 MHz wouldn't be able to run it even if the cpu was supported. (The same answer applies to Wolfenstein 3D aswell).

Was supposed to be a comment / reply to Flashpoint above (first post). (Also yes I know he was trolling and not serious).

Before reading the article, I thought from the picture that this was some Ben Heckendorn project!
