Reader John V. just reminded us that Samsung's
500GB SpinPoint M6 is now overdue. Sure, companies miss deadlines all the time -- but this time, it's different. For one thing, Samsung is notorious for issuing world's first, biggest, pinkest, (you name it) press releases. And when it's as important as a 2.5-inch, 500GB disk spinning at 5400rpm that fits in an industry standard 9.5-mm laptop enclosure, well, someone's gotta be held accountable for our disappointment...
320GB just doesn't cut it anymore. We're not pinching pennies for nothing Sammy. Update please?
[Thanks, John V.]

Hey Samsung, can you also give these to HP so they can put it in their 2133? Thanks.
Saad @ Apr 12th 2008 12:47AM
why don't you just buy a regular laptop if you need that much space?
Macindows @ Apr 2nd 2008 8:43AM
Thomas, I love your story titles!
Richard @ Apr 2nd 2008 10:22AM
Now I know that I need some coffee. I looked at your post and read "I love your story titties!" :(

How about a press release saying they missed a deadline...I thought they liked press conferences...

Thank you for bringing this up!
I've been putting off an upgrade with a 2.5" 320GB by westetn digital but decided to wait for the samsung instead since it was supposed to be available by the end of March!
jonathan @ Apr 2nd 2008 9:29AM
Only thing about Samsung is I havent had good luck with their reliability...maybe they have improved.
jpxdude @ Apr 2nd 2008 9:30AM
mmm, would be nice to have one inside my macbook! I'd love to see cheaper and bigger SSD's though...maybe in 2010 :-/

"Samsung is notorious for issuing world's first, biggest, pinkest"
speaking of pink,
where did all the eye burning pink/purple background go??? i was almost getting used to it!
coolbee8 @ Apr 2nd 2008 9:36AM
Sometimes enough is enough, before overdoing it.
Amarjeet Rai @ Apr 2nd 2008 9:59AM
Just typical
Hooterman @ Apr 2nd 2008 10:02AM
Yes, update please, my PS3 is dying to know the release date...
Dan Davis @ Apr 2nd 2008 11:08AM
Mine too! I was literally checking out with a 320 gb hdd from newegg when I heard news of this Samsung!
With all these mandatory installs for PS3 games (not to mention music/video files and possible DVR service coming) the extra space is going to be crucial!
Richard @ Apr 2nd 2008 10:24AM
I literally just bought a 320gb hdd today. I'd feel some buyers remorse, but I'm guessing these things will be expensive as shit at first. Maybe in the future I'll swap in the 320 as my OS drive and the 500 as my gaming/data drive.
Richard @ Apr 2nd 2008 10:32AM
Checked ZipZoom, their prices are around $360 but they don't have the drives in stock yet. Yeah, I'm cool with waiting for now.
jb909 @ Apr 2nd 2008 10:33AM
Props to John V. You're not the only one mate. Ive been scanning the web daily trying to track down this bloody thing...New-egg say they have 'no information on when'... lets hope Samsung hears this.... Whats that horrible looking Buffalo 500gb 2.5" external carrying? Is that the 12.5mm high drive? SO not this...?
John V. @ Jun 9th 2008 10:41PM
very nice of you to say, it is May 19 and I still can't order this drive
I live in the U.S. and need to go work in India...needless to say I'm not content with a USB drive...
I hope another manufacturer ships this first so I an diss Samsung again

kthanksbyebyenow.
monstroy @ Apr 3rd 2008 3:01PM
Why?
acasper @ Apr 2nd 2008 2:56PM
Seriously? Who cares? 500gb? I have a 120gb and it's barely 60% used. Sure I'd consider a 300 maybe, but what I want is some damn speed. Forget storage space... most of my users are at less than 80gb of actual data. SPEED, SPEED, SPEED. Storage is not what's need right now.
Joel @ Apr 2nd 2008 3:57PM
Yea, seriously. I bet if you clear your IE5 cache, you'll get a bunch of mroe free space too. (Those porn movies are big!)
I use a laptop for work, and I can tell you that I can think of plenty of things that I would put in a 500gb hard drive. Virtual Machines are 30gb each, i have 10 on an external hard drive. I would like to keep a norton ghost backup of my primary hard drive in case I decide to click on nip_slip_oops.jpg.exe by accident, etc.
Patriks7 @ Apr 2nd 2008 4:20PM
mate not everyone is like u
i had a 80gb hdd in my last laptop and i had 20gb free for a very long time.. deleting all useless stuff..
then i got a macbook with 250gb hdd for christmas (thats about 3 months ago) and ive been looking for a 320 gb hdd for about a month because i have 5 gb left and i deleted everything i dont need..
so id say some people care ;)

Samsung, Toshiba, Fujitsu and Hitachi always announce these 2.5" hard drives for laptops that supposedly increase laptop capacity but they never seem to ship when they promise. It seems that only Western Digital ships what it promises when it promises, or slightly late. Samsung is nortorious for making press announcements that never materialize or when if and they do, its too little too late. By the way, where is Seagate in all this??
Jeff @ Apr 18th 2008 10:08PM
The best news so far on this is that Hitachi is ACTUALLY shipping their 500GB drive, and it really is below $300! The catch of course is that it's 12.5mm.
Yeah, Samsung so let me down, too. I waited forever for them.
Currently I have a laptop and an external drive, but with 500GB inside I could have everything conveniently in my laptop.
Vlad @ Apr 2nd 2008 7:31PM
Hey, G-Tech also past due on their 500MB mini and 1TB raid mini. Shame. :) Perhaps too busy merging with Fabrik.
unreal @ Apr 3rd 2008 7:39PM
Yeah not everyone is the same fella, for example I'm a record producer and since I use a lot of software to compose my music on, its a pain having to bring an external harddrive to a studio or to another producers place when I want to work - I mean I can cope with it and at best its a minor convenience but a 500gb laptop drive would be the perfect solution.
Gieppetto @ Apr 5th 2008 12:09PM
What am waitig for is a 512 gb SSD without the failures we've been hearing about in the past few weeks. now that would be one hell of a storage solution.
etgg @ Apr 23rd 2008 6:51AM
And a little more truth...
ok this is an earlier press release - perhaps its a little more honest though?
