Gateway intros a slew of laptops, refuses to make your decision any easier
Hey, remember that Gateway P-172X FX we got our hands on yesterday? Well, now the gaming powerhouse has gone official, and is joined by a smaller, slightly less sporty edition -- the $999.99 M-6850FX. The 15.4-inch laptop features a Core 2 Duo T5550 CPU, an ATI Radeon HD 2600 graphics chipset, 3GB of RAM, a 320GB hard drive, and a DVD-R / RW / DVD-RAM optical drive. Two other mid-level models are being introduced as well; the $849.99 M-1626, and $749.99 T-1628. The former comes equipped with a 15.4-inch display, an AMD Turion TL-60 CPU, ATI Radeon HD x1270 graphics, 4GB of RAM, a 250GB hard drive, 802.11g, and HDMI. The latter downsizes to a 14.1-inch display, keeps the AMD CPU and ATI graphics chipset, plus 3GB of RAM, a 250GB hard drive, and the aforementioned wireless and HDMI support. The company is also introducing a new pen-based configuration, the C-142XL ($1,299.99), which sports a Core 2 Duo T8300 CPU, ATI Radeon X2300 HD GPU, 3GB of RAM, a 250GB hard drive, and utilizes a Wacom pen for input. That enough data for you? We thought so.

why orange?
Mark @ Apr 11th 2008 1:56PM
It's ugly.
Chebwa @ Apr 11th 2008 1:56PM
It's like a loading dock design gone wrong.
Mark @ Apr 11th 2008 3:28PM
great specs ... but I'd get laughed at if I brought that into work.
Matthew @ Apr 11th 2008 4:23PM
Why Gateway?
ethana2 @ Apr 11th 2008 7:48PM
Any color with a longer wavelength than green is ugly, in my opinion.
Samboini @ Apr 13th 2008 2:13PM
I disagree; red can look great. I for one think the XPS M1530 in red looks stunning, albeit the price hike for (RED) sucks.
Matt @ Apr 11th 2008 1:40PM
it's like an HP design gone wrong
Deputy Doffoos @ Apr 11th 2008 1:46PM
What's up with the touchpad?
Daren @ Apr 11th 2008 2:19PM
whats wrong with the touchpad? its below the center of the keyboard?
Brian @ Apr 11th 2008 1:47PM
I don't like the finger reader right in between the mouse buttons, seems like this would be an annoyance.
What happened to the black and white cow design?
bethel03 @ Apr 11th 2008 1:52PM
Looks like they partnered with Sony for those bright colors and with Motorola for the RAZR like soft keys on the top of the keyboard.
All in all its still a gateway...Ill pass...
RyanTV @ Apr 11th 2008 3:16PM
agreed... when you are talking about a gateway machine, your decisions couldn't be easier. run away!
Mango @ Apr 11th 2008 2:37PM
I would prefer to buy a Gateway only if the company allowed customers to configure their laptops, like they do at Dell, Hp, etc.
But then again, thats a personal preference, many people would still do fine with a pre-configured notebook.

i currently have what they have dubbed the "c-140xl" then they upgraded to the c-141xl (penryn 8300 + more ram on default config). now they're "upgrading" to the c-142xl which is the same as the c-141xl except for haveing Vista SP1.
this is actually quite awesome as the upgrade to SP1 apparently lowers the price of the entire tablet by $50. i'll put a penryn in my c-140 over the summer just to bring it up to snuff but it really doesn't need the power, just the cooler (temp wise) processor.

man... i got my laptop for $950 last august...
1.8 ghz core duo
1gb ram
intel gma945 integrated graphics :(
80gb hdd
dvd rom drive
15.4in matte screen
prices have dropped a lot.
martin @ Apr 11th 2008 2:54PM
i bought a gateway last august and it had the same case (sans orange crap). not exactly going for any new designs are they. still it was cheap and better than what i could get in the uk at the time
rob @ Apr 11th 2008 3:12PM
I have a gateway from October (t-1616) and mine's much nicer looking (charcoal w/ the RAZR style media keys still). That orange is just ugly in every sense of the word. I mean even gaudy Alienware laptops are better looking
Johnny @ Apr 11th 2008 3:34PM
I thought someone (was it Acer?) was supposed to buy them out and hopefully ditch the brand. Gateway has always been a symbol of crap to me, especially after working for their tech support years ago. If you see cow spots, you will also find a pile of cow shit.
celerysword @ Apr 11th 2008 4:26PM
still doe-eyed from seeing the words "Gateway" and "gaming powerhouse" in the same post. the times are a' changing. must go lie down...
Chris @ Apr 11th 2008 5:04PM
Why are they still using tiny trackpads? Oh yeah, because they are cheaper...so people can brag about how cheap their computers are in Apple related posts.
Joe Anstine @ Apr 11th 2008 5:32PM
i demand more data
Mr Epic Hero @ Apr 11th 2008 7:37PM
These laptops are not actually that ugly. I've used them at Best Buy and they're actually really cool looking.
ethana2 @ Apr 11th 2008 7:50PM
How much choice do we have with OS'es?
Vista, surprise, surprise......
Gateway, offer Ubuntu.
Microsoft, keep selling XP.
Apple, let your OS out into the real world.
I want to be able to pick between all 4.
michael @ Apr 11th 2008 10:24PM
So get a Mac, genius.
Ryan @ Apr 12th 2008 12:47AM
If u want a great looking laptop then buy an Apple. I don't think this gateway is beautiful or anything, but we should all agree its from a good company and the specs are amazing for the price. You guys need to stop complaining so much.
z0phi3l @ Apr 12th 2008 1:09AM
My only question is, who still buys Gateways anymore?
Yuri @ Apr 13th 2008 11:35AM
I do.
I had an eMachine desktop for 6 years, and their tech support is at least a million times better then HP
I'm using a Compaq notebook now. The tech support sucks so bad, I had to call 4 times to get my DC Adapter replaced, because the other one caught fire.
HA, they blamed the fire on me. Then I got charged 4 times for the replacement that should have been free.
Never did get any of the 4 that I was supposed to get for free. I eventually had to go to Best Buy and buy a new charger because Newegg didn't have what I needed at the time.
Gateways aren't the greatest, but for the price, they're amazing. Some people can't afford $2000 notebooks, like me.
Rogelio @ Apr 12th 2008 5:18AM
Hey guys, I think you miswrote the C142XL, it should be C141XL, on Gateway's site it says the C141XL which has a Core 2 Duo T8300 CPU, ATI Radeon X2300 HD GPU, 3GB of RAM, a 250GB hard drive, and utilizes a Wacom pen for input, also there isn't any info on the internet of any C142XL coming any soon. Just clearing that up. Keep up the good work.
thedesolate1 @ Apr 13th 2008 1:00AM
Guys stop bitching about the design it isn't that bad..... It could of been worst. The could of put led's everywhere to protrude your pirated movie viewing. Typical of "gaming" laptops.... On another note its a good deal It makes my toshiba p105 that I bought almost a year ago for the same price look like child's play. Technology is moving so fast its a gift and a curse.
ak4life @ May 6th 2008 1:46AM
I'm sticking with Dell until others start offering Linux as an OS option..
