Is it just me or is that a HORRIBLE design?
SSD under the battery? So when it overheats (or just heats up from charging) it increases the temperature of the drive, thus increasing its failure rate? Yeah, great call, Dell. At least you know you're getting more customers soon - but only because your old machines will break so easily.
I could go on and on about this, especially the positioning of the CPU/heat assembly, but I'll stop and go back to my well built ThinkPad that consistently runs cool :)

yeah, you're the only one. Typical drives are designed to operate between -40C and 85C, which is well within the range of temperatures it should experience at that point in the unit. This is evidenced by the fact that the unit has been out for 5 months and no one is complaining about temperature or drive failures. The XT is another machine that runs consistently cool.

Latitude XT isn't the only model they have that does this. The Latitude D420 and D430 both also have the hard drive in a similar spot, and those are much more popular laptops.
Yet you don't hear myriad complaints about it, and they haven't initiated a mass recall or such, so I would imagine the drives hold out just fine where they're at.

The XT isn't semi-rugged; it's a normal Tablet PC.

Reminds me of my first laptop disassembly. My boss shuffled the removed screws and threw in a few extras as a joke. Fortunately he knew exactly how to reassemble it.
