Archos TV+ TVportation plug-in shifts your TV to 605 / 705 PMP
Got yourself an Archos TV+? How's about a WiFi-enabled 605 / 705 PMP? Even if you're sadly answering "no" to the latter question, folks with a Windows or Windows Mobile-based machine can still get in on the placeshifting action, as Archos has just announced a swank new TV+ plug-in that brings Slingbox capabilities to those devices. The May-bound TVportation application, which will be available gratis for those who register their Archos TV+ on the firm's website (it's $49.99 otherwise), simply enables users to control their set-top-box from anywhere where WiFi is accessible, giving users the ability to watch live TV on their handheld. Sure, it's more of the same, but for the Archos faithful who refuse to trade in their 605 / 705, it's a dream come true. Check out a lengthy demonstration vid after the break. That's because my Archos 404 keep on crashing and they still haven't added multi-language settings to read the ID2-ID3 files.

who would buy Archos TV?? No HDMI, no DTS...basically it is only fit for the landfill
JohnTitor @ Apr 26th 2008 12:26AM
well maybe cause its not all to expensive for a Set-top-box + Media Receiver + DVR + placeshifter + webbrowser

You are totally spot on, the ArchosTV+ is one of the worst products I've ever used.

If you've already got a 6/705Wifi and docking station, like I have (its my home PVR, internet TV player and upNp content catcher) then 50 Euros for remote TV isn't too bad at all. A nice upgrade for Archos fans i'd say.
So this could be why they are bringing out a 3G-capable version of the Archos. (apparently)

He says 50€ in the video, but according to their powerpoint presentation http://www.archos.com/corporate/company/Presentation_ARCHOS_220408.pdf the TVportation plugin is going to be 39,99 € or $49,99. And it's free only if you use the TV+ as the TVportation server. Thus they are inciting users to get the TV+ to handle all the jobs around the TV, such as DVR, VOD, web browsing on the TV, media streamer and even synching with a 605 WiFi over the USB2 host connection to transfer the Mpeg4 DVR recordings directly to it.
So having the TV+ by your TV, and the 605 WiFi on-the-go, is kind of the best combo to have.
I'd say to be perfect for my use, they would just need to unlock 720p Mpeg4 playback and add somekind of automatic video Podcast downloader and synchroniser (kind of like Miro) with the 605 WiFi on the TV+. And oh yeah, the TV+ should be able to become a FTP server and the 605 WiFi connect to FTP servers and stream videos from FTP servers directly from the Video browser interface, and automatically move and host recordings on local NAS storage.

Wow, tv and cinemanow content. Why would anyone buy an ipod?
coolbee8 @ Apr 25th 2008 5:53PM
Cos they probably never heard of Archos, apple excels in marketing their stuff...
Kakkoii @ Apr 25th 2008 6:37PM
Yeah it's sad. They need to do a lot more North America advertising. I've never once seen a commercial for them over here.
Luckily I had found out about them when I was going to buy an iPod years ago.. I found out about the Archos Gmini402cc and was like.. Damn! I'm getting that instead.. Fuck. Much better :P.
Javi0084 @ Apr 25th 2008 6:40PM
Too bad Archos doesn't like OGG Vorbis. I e-mailed them about it and they said they add codecs according to popularity and they don't plan on adding OGG anytime soon.
Too bad.

This is sweet indeed. I recently got myself an iPhone and found that I was no longer bringing my 605 around with me so it ends up staying on the DVR station by my home theatre. If I could take my MBP with me to University or wherever, I could then simply load up windows on Parallels and watch all the programs I have on my HD PVR at home. I was thinking of getting myself a Slingbox, but this is a way I can use my 605 for things other than watching DIVX/XVID movies on my widescreen projo.
It would be even sweeter if somehow they could hack this "Windows Mobile" program and port it over to the iPhone...we will just have to cross our gadget tapping fingers until that happens, won't we?!
thethirdmoose @ Apr 25th 2008 9:06PM
...why would I trade in my 605?
what would i trade it in for?

Archos is pure crapshit. Contrast is horrible, much backlight bleed, not to. Cowon FTFW.
vladoman @ Apr 28th 2008 5:42AM
what bollock, the Archos screen are very good!

Has anyone found a solution to the wifi noise that you hear in the headphones while streaming video? I can stream all kinds of video/photos/music content from my server, but the headphone noise make watching movies via WIFI very annoying.
MDB @ May 22nd 2008 1:30PM
Yes, that drives me nuts. What good is it having the ability to stream video, watch webtv or listen to web radio (via new plugin) if you have to listen to the constant clicking and popping. If anyone knows how to fix this I too would greatly appreciate the advice. Thanks.

I forgot to mention that I have the 605 WIFI 160GB.
