Sumitomo set to produce 40-inch OLED panels in 2009
Not that there was any doubt that OLED is on its way to larger sizes (hasn't it been since like 2005?), but Japanese firm Sumitomo Chemical announced its plans to produce 40-inch OLED panels for HDTVs some time in 2009, meaning Sumitomo-based TVs could hit the market in 2009 or 2010. Samsung's old-skool 40-inch OLED HDTV prototype shown above for scale.

But will the picture quality still be as good as the XEL-1's?
David @ May 11th 2008 5:54PM
probably not, but I'm betting it'll still look fantastic

If they can do a 1080p resolution, it probably will.

Japan robot craze has finally gone too far.

Japanese (like me) have only learned to smile in the past 5 years. It'll take another decade or so until we can do it naturally.

'Samsung's old-skool 40-inch OLED HDTV prototype shown above for scale.'
As you can see on the bottom of the TV, it's a Samsung TV and not the Sumitomo TV. Samsung is not Japanese.

"Sumitomo tires and they gotta be run flat. TV where the horn goes, boy can you top that" - Manny Fresh
Now they can make the TV's, too.
b10hazard @ May 11th 2008 11:49PM
Companies in japan make almost everything. For example, Mitsubishi, cars, fork lifts, TVs, aircraft, ect.
So, ya, the tires and the TV too.
(note, NEC is part of sumitomo. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sumitomo )

Good point. Don't forget Daewoo, Hitachi, and Fuji (whose 'Heavy Industries' division makes Subaru) as well.

For the curious, Sumitomo Chemical bought Cambridge Display Technology last year. Been kinda waiting to see what they'd do with it.

That TV and table looks like they are pushed up fairly close to the wall.
I think there is only the head and shoulders, and some fake fingers.
I don't think there is a body or legs at all.
I keep coming back to this picture. It's freaking me out.
whatsdamattau @ May 12th 2008 12:22AM
Yay! I'm in line!
boe @ May 12th 2008 1:07AM
What year are they going to make some big enough for other rooms of the house besides the bathroom?
Josh @ May 12th 2008 1:37AM
Does it come with that freakishly creepy girl?
Zzephyr @ May 12th 2008 1:56AM
Hmm, nothing freakish or creepy about that young lady. She's looks mighty fine to me.
DiscoCat5 @ May 12th 2008 2:37AM
is it just me or does that tv not look 16:9?
Silverfrog @ May 12th 2008 10:40AM
As long as these things are competitvely priced, I'd buy one.
blueeyesm @ May 12th 2008 1:48PM
Can you change the image to one of an x-rayed body posing vertically?
Zinger314 @ May 31st 2008 5:21PM
She looks like Chucky's Asian sister.
