O2 to announce 3G iPhone in "the coming weeks"
It's all starting to come together. After getting a general ballpark courtesy of AT&T store employee vacations last week, and a hint of "next month" on Monday, O2's own CEO is promising a 3G iPhone announcement in "the coming weeks." Which, let's face it, doesn't really put us any closer to pinpointing the exact date, but does make us feel a bit better about the 1000 "iPhone 3G in June or life isn't worth living anymore" t-shirts we just bought on CafePress.

Stop being a mac user. who cares if you are first.
Tinu @ May 14th 2008 4:35PM
One "3-G iPhone is coming" article per day, eh?
Tomorrow's article's title: Facebook group predicts iPhone to come out in June.
Friday's title: "June" "3-G" and "iPhone" spotted on a T-shirt.
Ok Ok =). I will stop now. Hehe.
mulder_fbi @ May 14th 2008 10:34AM
Apple is releasing a 3G iPhone?!?!?!?!?!
Vanillacide @ May 14th 2008 1:50PM
But will O2 allow me to upgrade my iPhone to a 3G iPhone immediately, or do I have to wait until the 18-month contract expires?
gabe @ May 14th 2008 10:34AM
engadget please STFU about the 3G iphone already!
L @ May 14th 2008 11:06AM
Couldn't agree more...we all know it is coming, we all know it will almost surely be announced at WWDC. No need to quote every darn little ultra-vague comment even slightly pointing in that direction...
*Sigh*
Rich @ May 14th 2008 11:19AM
My mate Dave told me down the pub that a 3G iPhone might be coming out soon. Why hasn't Engadget reported this news???
Kizorblade @ May 14th 2008 1:03PM
Engadget will STFU when you and other people like wise STFU.
More hits = cash = win
Just don't click on the damn things.
danny @ May 14th 2008 1:22PM
Kizorblade is right, ironic huh?
Yourself @ May 14th 2008 1:43PM
I don't know a ton about the inner workings of corporately owned large-scale news blogs, but...
I really doubt that Engadget does a rundown at the end of the day every day checking hits for each post, and saying "okay, 3G iPhone post got a lot of hits, make sure someone finds some news about it tomorrow so we can get more."
Then again, I could be wrong. Maybe that is how they work.
Jason Martin @ May 14th 2008 1:52PM
Why on earth should they STFU about the 3G (really 2G, but that's another flame for another day)? They exist to report that stuff. Just because you don't care doesn't mean no one does. I am planning on getting the new iPhone the moment it's available, so I want all iPhone-related posts I can get!
So, why don't you and all of the other armchair-editors STFU?
LiQuiD_FuSioN @ May 14th 2008 1:58PM
Wow, so TEH AWESOMER's post can get deleted, but a user's comment telling Engadget to "STFU" still remains? Erm, okay.
Phill B @ May 14th 2008 10:35AM
Isn't it a bit pointless to wait until June if the bloody owner of O2 has already confirmed that the device is coming??
socbrian @ May 14th 2008 10:36AM
no the whole thing is a lie.
Andy TGD @ May 14th 2008 11:58AM
The cake is a lie...
X-BLADE™ @ May 14th 2008 10:40AM
What is iPhone?
aRealClassAct @ May 14th 2008 1:05PM
"iphone" is the first in apples new lineup of "idevices"
Soon to come, "itoaster", "iblender", and "istapler". Keep your eyes peeled people, apple is here to rock your world.
Steffen Jobbs @ May 14th 2008 2:17PM
The iPhone is a handset that if you were to own one, you would become a mobile genius and chick magnet. Then you wouldn't have to spend all day asking questions on Engadget. Go to the nearest Apple store and buy an iPhone to see for yourself.
aRealClassAct @ May 14th 2008 2:23PM
False.
The iphone will NOT make you popular with t3h females. Only charm and good looks can accomplish this.
Or perhaps an overwhelming amount of monies.
These are, however, only speculations. As for now, science has yet to prove just what attracts these strange beings. "Women" as they have dubbed by the masses.
Eastman @ May 14th 2008 10:41AM
what is this iPhone you are speaking of ? :)
ps.. i want one .. a t-shirt that is ..
yeah yeah .. and one of them ithings too :)
grazie
lu-mi @ May 14th 2008 10:42AM
I want such a t-shirt :)
ralph @ May 15th 2008 10:01AM

pardity @ May 14th 2008 10:43AM
Find out when Sprints dropping the insight and you can gurantee the 3g iphone will be withing a week of it..
broli @ May 14th 2008 10:44AM
Don't be cockblocks people, engadget can't be blamed for not listening to its reader...wait it can.
Zak @ May 14th 2008 12:16PM
Not listening to its readers? Engadget readers are the ones who keep commenting in the iPhone and Apple articles, which bump the post counts, which tells Engadget that Apple articles are popular. Seriously, how dense do you have to be not to get that? Furthermore, Apple products also won a bunch of categories in the 2007 Engadget awards. And those were voted on by... wait for it... Engadget readers.
I'd say it's pretty crystal clear what Engadget readers want.
danny @ May 14th 2008 1:25PM
Zak 1 - Broli 0
broli @ May 14th 2008 1:48PM
What a great point you make. I bet the categories it won was "Best touchscreen phone.", "Best all in one computer." and "Most overpriced laptop.". It's called giving people little choice dickhead.

Engadget: Do you moderate your forums? Why do you waste the time of those of us who specifically view the forums to see how people react to news by letting pointless postings like the first two on this O2 iPhone item get through? I saw that there were some comments, clicked the link and have just wasted my valuable time. This has been going on for a while now and if you don't begin to filter the forums of fluff, I plan to cease reading Engadget - so you'll lose a regular reader, poster and viewer of ad banners. And I'll consider creating my own technology blog that filters out the immature. And that will be of value to advertisers. I enjoy Engadget (in particular some of the hillarious writing style), but immature pointless postings dents it's cred. Please remove dents ASAP. This is my first warning of 3, and I hope others will follow.
Najakwa @ May 14th 2008 10:50AM
hahaha, what a douche. dent censorship? good riddance. create your own tech blog and get the hell out of here.
berryhill @ May 14th 2008 10:53AM
bwahahahaha! No one cares if you read or not! LAWLZ
L @ May 14th 2008 11:09AM
I'm fairly sure Engadget trembles at the thought of you creating a techblog. One more of about 2,46725 trillion F-list tech blogs. Good luck *lol*
nerdtalker @ May 14th 2008 12:54PM
"Please remove dents ASAP. This is my first warning of 3, and I hope others will follow."
Are you seriously issuing an ultimatum?! Pfft, and what, when you reach the third warning a bomb goes off somewhere and the internet stops working? Good riddance, perhaps you'll manage to destroy yourself and your Orwellian ideals while you're at it.
Nobody is forcing you to read the comments, so don't read them. Engadget used to heavily censor the comments, but as it has matured they've adopted a much more hands-off approach, and I think everything has gotten much more... entertaining since.
Kizorblade @ May 14th 2008 1:01PM
Engadget. I am ashamed of you because you had to lose the "Lowest Ranked" moniker.
Because this guy deserves it.
redbenn @ May 14th 2008 10:45AM
what about the FCC approval? They bypassing it this time? Or will Apple pull a fast one, and 3G only in Europe?
Mischa Lockton @ May 14th 2008 10:54AM
They are just working this situation with guerrilla marketing prowess- about as well as the original release. I wonder if people will camp out on a sidewalk for this phone? I'll be inside watching my stock, hoping too many people don't "buy the rumor, sell the news" which is exactly what happened last time Apple released a phone. The stock flirted with 100 then, and is coyly eying 200 right about now.
L @ May 14th 2008 11:12AM
Well, the low supplies at the moment are obviously already part of that guerilla marketing campain. Nothing hypes a product quite as much as "I got one, you can't have one"...
wickedpheonix @ May 14th 2008 10:55AM
So how many "rumors" (more like confirmations) are we getting a day now? 2, 3, maybe 5?
Esat Dedezade @ May 14th 2008 11:04AM
Sweet, I can't believe they are going to bring out a 3G iPhone, never thought it would happen!
Richard Lai @ May 14th 2008 11:08AM
Meizu's phone is still nowhere to be seen.
Oliver @ May 14th 2008 11:20AM
@Richard lai
Fuck meizu, they can rip my ass off
Richard Lai @ May 14th 2008 5:44PM
Meizu's Assphone. Sounds good to me. Stamp your autograph on it while you're there.
Other possible names:
jPhone (engineers will understand that)
realPhone (expect tumble weed to roll across the screen)
eyePhone (no comment)
iFone (I'll have to buy Meizu's OEM a drink if he dares to)
nuPhone (and we'll play along)
MeiPhone (now this is cool, cos they'd just add "Me" to iPhone. Nice personal touch.)
p3t3b2 @ May 14th 2008 11:26AM
To my understanding it will be '3G capable' meaning it most likely won't have 3G(EDGE) until late 2008 to early 2009, Apple still hasn't solved the battery drain issue. Not to mention Att's 3G network is not even close to being nationwide!
okpat @ May 17th 2008 8:31PM
hi,
why would they launch a 3G iphone if its not 3g? doesn`t make much sense, might as well wait until its ready in that case...
also, where have you heard about the battery issue?

MadMike @ May 14th 2008 11:27AM
Dear Engadget:
I have an iPhone, I own multiple Mac computers. I have even looked into programming on the Mac platform. I will most likely purchase a 3G iPhone after the crowds disperse.
But for the sake of Zeus, if I hear another 3G iPhone rumor I will freaking go absolutely insane. Either go all super-spy and get us some real dirt like actual dates, stores that will have them first, definitive pictures or just stop blogging about it. Get a job at apple HQ and take spy photos of El Steve-O's email.
These rumors remind of of a clock I had on Linux. You could set it to be more and more vague. Like 5:00 could be "Afternoon" and the like.
Sometime in the next few weeks does nothing for me. An actual date, time, second and millisecond of when Steve-O says the "Thaa-ree" in 3G. Not that I actually really care about 3G. Sure EDGE is slower than dog-crap oozing uphill - but I'm sure I'll still complain about 3G too.
I just want MMS motherquackers.
Thank You
Esat Dedezade @ May 14th 2008 11:55AM
I concur with your comment, but I felt I should specifically comment on this section of it:
"Sure EDGE is slower than dog-crap oozing uphill..."
You Sir deserve a +1 for that original description.
:)
w00t @ May 14th 2008 12:44PM
June 9th, 9:47am 7 seconds and 195 milliseconds.
You heard it here first ;)
MadMike @ May 14th 2008 1:54PM
Esat:
I wish Engadget had slashdot style karma points.
:-)
w00t: Okay, watch is set. Wouldn't it be funny if its even close.
