PS3 firmware 2.40 update coming tomorrow
It's been a long time coming, but in-game XMB will arrive on your PS3 tomorrow. That's right, Wednesday July 2nd and likely kicking off as a rolling, firmware 2.40, network update just as soon as the clock ticks over the top in Japan. You know, for those of you looking to get a jump on your Trophy collection. [Via Joystiq]

I'll be up waiting to download for sure!!!
Nietzche @ Jul 1st 2008 5:02AM
enjoy having to wait forever for the download to complete.
Dxw @ Jul 1st 2008 5:20AM
Is this going be a larger sized update (MB) than all the others?
Josh @ Jul 1st 2008 5:21AM
By forever do you mean 30 minutes? Because that's normally all the longer it takes me to download an update.
Mic2000 @ Jul 1st 2008 5:40AM
4 minutes most of the time... (20Mbit internet connection)
Will H. @ Jul 1st 2008 8:06AM
Thankfully I'm in Australia - I hope we get it first :) 2 Hours ETA!

UPDATE HAS BEEN PULLED DOWN BY SONY
waiownsyou @ Jul 1st 2008 4:43AM
No offense, but the level of writing for these blog posts just seems rushed now-a-days and they don't seem like you've put your editor heart in to it.
Bad, Thomas Ricker, BAD!!
bolezhinkov @ Jul 1st 2008 12:49PM
or because there have been a million articles about 2.40 already we don't need a thomas hardy version
Evan @ Jul 1st 2008 4:43AM
... damn it. I don't come back from London for another month!
Metkis @ Jul 1st 2008 4:49AM
Of the consoles in this generation, the PS3 has, by far, seen the greatest change and really bloomed into a nice console. I am just hoping to see some more exclusive RPGs head its way (I mean, that was basically the hallmark of the PS2).
holycow @ Jul 1st 2008 5:04AM
SO glad i got the PS3... these constant updates just make me so happy!
BuddyBoy @ Jul 1st 2008 5:21AM
Hurry up and stop teasing!
I WANT I WANT I WANT!!!!!!
Arran @ Jul 1st 2008 5:31AM
You're all getting excited at a feature the 360 had at launch 3 years ago?
Dxw @ Jul 1st 2008 5:34AM
What does xbox have to do with it?
BubbaGump @ Jul 1st 2008 5:35AM
Yeah because the 360 is so badass,
The Best Feature of all on the 360,
A Death Certificate :D
numbsock @ Jul 1st 2008 5:36AM
360 owners will get their chance to get excited too when a blu-ray drive gets released, which oh btw the PS3 had at launch :)
Mic2000 @ Jul 1st 2008 5:42AM
No need for swapping Disc's Snake
Arran @ Jul 1st 2008 5:53AM
I'm just saying i'm not that excited about this, and they should have had it when it first came out.
Anyway i prefer the ps3 (except the pad), as my 360 rrod'd 2 weeks after purchased :(
JerkfacedFed @ Jul 1st 2008 8:06AM
ps3 losers out of the woodwork again to low rank anyone criticizing their system. he's right, those features should have been launched with the system.
why i switched over from a sony guy to a pc / xbox guy is because sony never bothered caring about the online experience and universalizing anything. i bought the ps2 network adapter thinking i would be able to play games like counter-strike and battlefield online, but was faced with the worst online experience ever. each game has its own set of user id's and accounts that are non-interoperable, and hardly anyone even played online. ps3 did nothing to change this. the only difference is that the console ships with an ethernet port and hdd to update itself.
rumble, online support, game patches, achievements (trophies,) custom soundtrack, downloadable content, leaderboards, friends list, message system, user id, in game voice chat are all half assed and variable from no support to some, which says to me that they dont care. ill stick to pc / xbox gaming. ps3 is for single player games.
Pepsipoint @ Jul 1st 2008 10:53AM
I own both systems, but forcing users to buy br is half the reason people don't buy the system. BR is why the price is so high. Had Microsoft added an internal HD system they would have had the same problem. So the argument BD VS HD isn't too valid.
Greg @ Jul 1st 2008 4:07PM
Yeah, they should have had this feature a while ago.
Instead, they put in blueray, a hard drive in every model, wifi, a cell processor, wireless controllers, a card reader, free network access, and adequate cooling.
I can get a software update for free, what would it cost you to get that on the 360?
thedesolate1 @ Jul 1st 2008 4:19PM
Yeah thats true... now when the PS3 has a red ring of death... well now THAT would be news... its a feature that eludes even the mightiest of consoles.
JayD-1K @ Jul 1st 2008 7:05PM
@Arron
the 360 did not have these features at launch. why do people keep saying that same crap over and over........because it's wrong!
NHAnimator @ Jul 1st 2008 8:20AM
I'm a self-proclaimed PS3 fanboy, so let me just have a little fun with the 360-lovers out there:
1. Regarding the 360 having in-game XMB first: Okay, we've heard.
2. How many significant new features has the Xbox gotten via firmware lately?
3. When your system isn't being used, is it helping to try to find a cure for a disease, or is it just keeping the living room extra-toasty?
4. PS3 second with in-game XMB. Yes, I know.
5. Mmmmm. Blu-Ray.
6. I can (and do) access all of my photos, video and music via my PSP from any wireless connection in the world.
7. DLC like PS1 games and echochrome.
8. The Xbox had an in-game XMB from the start? No! You don't say?
One thing the 360 does have over the PS3: My unit has only a single red LED. No pretty circles.
tyler @ Jul 1st 2008 9:17AM
7b. Don't forget Pixel Junk Monsters!
Rowdehaj @ Jul 1st 2008 10:45AM
The Xbox does not have in-game XMB. The XMB is by far more elegant than the advert-mayhem that is the 360 Dashboard.
Daily dose of PS3 fanboyism, yay!
Prokanda @ Jul 2nd 2008 8:47AM
in my house, we have all 3 of the current gen consoles.
maybe MS doesn't need to do firmware updates because... the online store was awesome from the beginning, we had "trophies" from the beginning, and yes, as you mentioned your bitterness about it: we've had the ability to pull up the system menu since the beginning.
when your console ships with the features it SHOULD have in the box and your company is actually focused on what matters (i.e. GAMES), then you don't really need to spend a bunch of time twidling your fingers and pushing out the features you forgot (or didn't know you needed) in the beginning.
we have 4 games for the ps3 and about 10 bluray movies...
I'm not replacing my 300+ dvd collection overnight because some console came with a new format. sooo... you can "mmmm bluray" right into the $30/disc pricetag. enjoy watching your 20 movies. you're special.
I don't waste my electricity nor the lifespan of my ps3 to help cure disease... thanks for being wasteful, I bet you even have something like a yukon. oh, and the ps3 puts out just as much heat as my 360. so, shut up.
you can share files anywhere in the world from your computer if you have the setup... congratulations that you can go from having a full battery on your psp (yes, I have one too) to it being dead in under an hour.... so how was that 1/2 of a movie you got to watch? nice?
ooooo PS1 games? exciting...... now if I could just play my ps2 games on this 40GB piece of crap...... maybe one day, after the PS4 is about to come out.. they can release an update so that we can take up 20GB of that space for an emulator.... like the 360 had out of the box (yes, it needs to have a special update for the backwards-compatible games... but that's better than my PS3.... backwards-compatibility doesn't exist for me.
and last, yeah yeah yeah..... RRoD..... big whoop... I got mine on new years day a couple months after they launched and mine got the RRoD too...... but y'know what? they had a brand new one to my door with a free month of xbox live gold in under 2 weeks (that includes shipping me a free box/shipping to return the old one). I can't say as much for the PS2 that I paid 415 for when it launched, only to find that it didn't even work OUT OF THE BOX.. so, I'll chance an issue that's covered for 3 years with awesome customer service (that I didn't even have to wait on hold for, by the way) over a dead-out-of-the-box console any day.
so, in short, maybe you should realize that just because it seems to be the best console choice for you and you like it's features, not everyone feels the same way (even those of us that own all of the consoles and can compare).
kthx.
Matt @ Jul 1st 2008 8:28AM
Sorry JerkfacedFed but the PS3 online experience is non comparable to that of the PS2. "PS3 did nothing to change this" Dont know where you dug that up from however I havent had to input any user ids foor any of my favourite PS3 games be that CoD4, Battlefield or GT. They have all done it for me. The PS3 online experience is getting better and better. Yes it has taken a while to get there but it now works very well for a "FREE" service.
If you wanted to play and form of CS or the original Battlefields online you should have stuck to the PC where they owned over all the consoles.
However, all my mates at work now have PS3s and there is a group of around 20 of us that get online and game with our PS3s daily against each other. The PS3 online service works well and will only get better over time. the 2.4 update proves that.
Biomech @ Jul 1st 2008 8:57AM
Can't wait!
Can one (voice) chat with a friend while in game or do we still have to quit for that?
Dxw @ Jul 1st 2008 9:36AM
Still have to quit.
Danakin @ Jul 1st 2008 9:14AM
Awesome about the update, can't wait!
Alright...all this console war sh*t is starting to piss me off...no, I take that back, it has been pissing me off for a while...
(semi-rant)
2 statements:
1. You are all useless...each console has its own perks and drawbacks, but they all perform one basic function better than anything else (except maybe sex)...and that is to bring entertainment and joy to people of all ages and backgrounds.
2. Trying to claim that one console is better than another is like trying to claim a wooden door is better than a glass door...they both perform the same function, but each has it's own advantages and disadvantages. For Example, a glass door can be seen through but it is easier to break, and a wooden door is sturdy as all get out but you don't know who's on the other side when someone starts a tappin'. And yeah, yeah you can say crap like, "but you can put a peep hole in the wooden door, that way you can see through it and still have the protection", and then someone will counter with "but what about bulletproof glass? You can see through the WHOLE THING and be BETTER protected than a wooden door" and someone else will be like "but bulletproof glass costs WAAAY more than a wooden door"...but then finally...someone says something intelligent..."If there is a fire, will you be able to open it to get out?" And then everyone realizes that none of that other sh*t matters, it's all just minor details that each person has their own reasons for liking or not liking, and this getting offended because someone has a difference of opinion than you (Daniel Tosh) is just individually degrading on your own part, and you ALL need to realize that and stop it.
Note: To those of you who are just having fun messing with other people...carry on.
MC Double Def DP @ Jul 1st 2008 9:48AM
thanks for the wood vs glass door comparison. off to home depot!
fistpittingnork @ Jul 1st 2008 10:47AM
What? Home Depot sucks.
Lowes is where it's at.
If 360 and Ps3 are glass and wooden doors, does that mean Wii is metal? What about steel doors with wood overlay and a window? PsThwii60?
stevo @ Jul 1st 2008 9:48AM
Did everything just taste purple for a second?
Vcize @ Jul 1st 2008 10:47AM
Arg, I was so excited for this update, but there's still soooooo much lacking.
-No cross-game invites
-No cross-game voice chat
-No cross-game voice messages
-No universal custom soundtracks (it's up to the developers to support it)
I thought the whole point in in-game XMB was cross-game functionality, but the only thing that's really been added on that front was cross-game text messages. If there was one feature to definite in-game XMB, it would have been cross-game invites, and that's not even there.
Oh well, it's a step in the right direction at least, and still free. Add that stuff though and I'll gladly give you my $2.50/mo or whatever it is.
Anyone know if there are any plans for a PSN website similar to what XBL has. I'd love to be able to manage my messages/friends list from there, and check online to see if any of my friends are on and what they're playing before deciding if I want to boot up the console and play some games.
tom @ Jul 1st 2008 11:11AM
Is there any chance they're including a PSP-esque media player that can do internet radio (shout cast) ... cause that's about the only thing I'd care about seeing right now. tried a lot of the suggested methods for rolling it myself, but nothing has really worked as it should (open to suggestions)
slumcat @ Jul 1st 2008 11:52AM
The TwonkyVision media server allegedly has internet radio support. I haven't tried that feature yet, but so far it works great as a UPnP media server for my PS3, so I would imagine the radio part would also be well implemented. It may not be exactly what you're looking for, and of course it's not built-in, but you might give it a shot.
tom @ Jul 1st 2008 12:13PM
I think the Twonky Vision media server is the one that I got to technically stream the station, but the stream always dies after 30 min.. not sure if it's the server or PS3 that is having heart burn.
slumcat @ Jul 1st 2008 12:22PM
There's a setting somewhere in Twonky's config to fix that problem (at least in the V5 beta) by turning off some sort of drop-client message.
demonic @ Jul 1st 2008 11:36AM
i just sold my 360 because of the terible lag and the community is a bunch of whiny kids also xbmp never updates you cant save movies or mp3s on the hdd and all u 360 fanboys forget the worst thing about ur console.......microsoft!!!! anything that company owns has problems....btw im writing this on my ps3 lets see ur xbox do that fools
Prokanda @ Jul 2nd 2008 8:31AM
you posted this past your bedtime.... don't you have a horde toon that you should be ninja-ing ore with right now?
Kevin @ Jul 1st 2008 12:20PM
I can't wait for the update. One thing that I'd love to see but hasn't been addressed in this update is more visualisations for music playback. The visualisations on the PSP look nice. I'm hoping for a port.
Danny @ Jul 1st 2008 3:09PM
If my ps3 want stuck at UPS in Vernon CA, due to "ADVERSE WEATHER CONDITIONS" i would be even happier! But this is still sweet!
Survivalism @ Jul 1st 2008 3:12PM
The reason Custom Soundtracks are, and have been up do the develelopers is because Microsoft being the smart people they are patented the ability to play music on an OS in a gaming machine. Good work Microsoft, its pretty funny watching sony try to figure something out.
Tyler @ Jul 2nd 2008 12:28AM
Erm i just got this firmware....No voice chat in game.......Erm no Internet browser or in-game music....But Messaging works well
