Averatec All-In-One PC brings a little generic flair to the party
Averatec's been trying to bring a little pop to its products lately, and the new All-In-One PC (seriously, that's what it's called) is the company's sleekest effort to date, copping a little style from both the iMac and the Gateway One. Your $1249 won't buy you anything spectacular behind that 22-inch display, but it's not too bad either: 2.4GHz E4600 Core 2 Duo with GeForce 8400 graphics, 2GB RAM, a 320GB disk, and Vista Home Premium. That's not a particularly astounding deal compared to the name-brand all-in-ones, but the specs are slightly better, so if you're spending nights ripping the labels off your jeans, it looks like you've got the perfect machine to start working on that followup to Plastic Surgery Disasters.

ZOMG! It looks like a monitor.

imac?
GatgetMan @ Jul 7th 2008 8:59PM
If only we had the "secret Word" like back in the days of PeeWee's Playhouse....
imac?... AHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!
Ruben @ Jul 7th 2008 8:54PM
Why do they insist on the Leno chin?
Make it thicker, make the border around the screen equal, and not only will you not be compared to another nameless all in one, but you will have one that isn't as hideous as that nameless brand.
Flashpoint @ Jul 7th 2008 8:56PM
the all in one PC style of the imac/emac is one of the few places I give APPLE credit.
If you need to set up a computer lab, you just get a bunch of imacs and either an imac or G5 Pro desktop as the Administrator...wired to gigabit ethernet... and you are SET.
Leopard Server isn't as stable as TIGER but both Mac's server platforms ARE SO MUCH EASIER TO USE THAN WINDOWS 2003 Server, I'm astonished. I learned to use them in less than a month.
As for this desktop, you won't get me to buy any allinone PC that can't play Crisis in VERY HIGH, so you'd better implant a Nvidia 280' and 4GB of RAM.
GatgetMan @ Jul 7th 2008 9:25PM
If you're gonna give Apple credit, you've got to give them proper credit...

@ Flashpoint
All your posts, no matter what the topic, either whine about something unrelated, moan how Windows is so horrible, or babble on about playing Crisis VERY HIGH!
STFU FOOL! The only person who wants to hear you talk is you!
Reid @ Jul 7th 2008 11:55PM
I'm trying to figure out if you got low-ranked for:
* Talking about an Apple product in a positive way in a non-Apple thread
* Talking about an APPLE design in a negative way in a non-Apple thread
* Mentioning Crysis
* Saying Windows sucks at something
* Implying that Windows *doesn't* suck at something
... just the ramblings of another anti-all-in-one sucker... Although I guess they make sense where the cost of the machine is far less important than the costs involved in paying staff to deploy and maintain said machines.
Plus, I guess with the money I would have saved buying an iMac instead of a Mac Pro + Dell 2407WFP on anti-iMac principle, I could *afford* to be throwing out my monitor every time I bought a new machine. And anyway, my typical 5 year upgrade cycle means I'll likely end up wanting a new monitor in 2011 anyway.
Metkis @ Jul 8th 2008 1:46AM
@Reid:
So he says, "The all in one PC style of the imac/emac is one of the few places I give APPLE credit." Gracing the Apple with his credit of the All-in-one's form and yet you think he's bashing the form. He states that he doesn't want an all-in-one that's not capable of high-performance gaming just in a more rudimentary way.
WITH NO REFERENCE TO PRICE.
Apparently his comments are "... just the ramblings of another anti-all-in-one sucker... " And all the sudden you pop in a strawman argument about pricing that has nothing to do with his comment.
I'll agree that his comment is no where near enlightening, but quite frankly Reid, I don't even understand what you're arguing. He wants high-performance gaming and All-in-Ones aren't designed for that simply because of their lack of being able to upgrade and high-performance parts. He likes OSX server management better and he gave credit to Apple's designers.
Geez, I'm not an Apple fan at all, infact I own none of their products so there is no zealotry from me here. He has a different opinion about HIS need for an all-in-one (even stating some of what they are good for) and somehow he turns into a beast that simply is some crummy hater of them.
Metkis @ Jul 8th 2008 1:51AM
@Reid: Oh sorry, I thought you were calling him an anti-all-in-one sucker! My bad, well go ahead and rank my previous post low. It deserves to sit in the pity of its wrongness.
Harry Wagstaff @ Jul 8th 2008 7:51AM
@Reid
Basically, if you make a comment actually about the tech in question, you get low ranked, whereas if you make a comment about a comment about the tech in question you get high ranked. I call it 'Metacommenting'.

seems a little expensive ... the dell looks better.
Bender Bending Rodriguez @ Jul 7th 2008 9:07PM
The Dell is considerably more expensive than this for the included HW.
krizoitz @ Jul 7th 2008 9:00PM
Do they get extra credit for ripping off two companies?
Tynen @ Jul 7th 2008 9:00PM
expensive
pfromg @ Jul 8th 2008 9:32AM
thats because it looks exactly like an imac ,so they can justify a higher price....

Kinda shady no?

Is that a Dead Kennedys reference on Engadget?
I'll be damned.

ethanthekiwi @ Jul 7th 2008 9:23PM
Why not save $500 by getting a regular PC and chucking the tower under the desk?
gad get @ Jul 7th 2008 9:57PM
Because chucking the tower is just a plain bad idea.
you @ Jul 7th 2008 9:24PM
to tell you the truth, this computer's specs aren't bad at all. One year ago my parents bought a Dell XPS desktop with a 2.4ghz intel dual core that cost way more than this. Not to mention that it doesn't look to bad either compared to other desktops.
solarpos @ Jul 7th 2008 9:36PM
The Dead Kennedy's reference was a mind blower.
initialxy @ Jul 7th 2008 9:38PM
now that's the kind of design that might get sued. reminds me of eMachine's epic failure.

Reid @ Jul 7th 2008 11:57PM
Holy crap. I never new of that story. It sure does look like a Bondi Blue iMac. I think the font of the writing on front, same design speakers, and the keyboard and mouse coloration seal the case for me..
Jordan Biffle @ Jul 7th 2008 9:39PM
So, Do I really have to be THAT guy, Do I, I mean I'm an Apple fanboy but I don't mind doing it to have one basher. Okay, no one else wants to.
IT LOOKS NOTHING LIKE AN iMac!!! If anything, the iMac should get some ideas off of this, this computer that I already forgot the name of.
okay, now that I got that out of the way, I can go back to being an Apple fanboy, Thats the worst iMac clone ever.
GatgetMan @ Jul 7th 2008 10:07PM
The amazing thing with articles like this is that after you read it, it stays there. So if you forgot a detail, say the name or something, you could go back and read it again...
Unless you were hoping your comment would be FIRST! Then I completely understand...

Everybody and their uncle is selling these things. Why the heck has nobody thrown a touchscreen on one? It seems freakin' obvious.

HP Touchsmart IQ504/506 has what you're looking for... Touchscreen and all and for about the same price.

I can't completely access this item until I see the included keyboard and mouse. Only then can it be properly displayed.

I checked their official site and there are no keyboard / mouse shown.
but the back looks terrible...

Yousef Reda @ Jul 8th 2008 2:43AM
I dunno about you, but I spend most of my time looking at the front of my monitor, not the back.
I have to give these guys some credit, however, all jokes aside (well, except this all-in-one pc, since it is the object of this discussion). There are some very welcome additions to this computer that I think the people at Apple/other companies may want to consider adopting themselves.
-There are 6 USB ports on this computer. (Ok, it isn't that big of a deal, but it's all the more convenient, which is what I think an all-in-one computer is supposed to be. Printer, card reader/camera, digital media player, etc can all be plugged in at once without having to unplug anything)
-2 of the 6 USB ports are, along with what appear to be a headphone port and a microphone port, on the right side of the computer. I've used the latest all-in-one iMacs and I gotta say that trying to plug in a USB cable into the back of them can be tedious (especially when plugging in from below, and i'm so used to pluggin in from above on my tower). Obviously it hurts aesthetics when you see cables coming out the right side of your computer, but ... again, convenience/function over form: you can easily see the right side of your computer, whereas you can't as easily see the back side (unless you're like yui and look at the back side of your monitor all the time, heh).
-Er, well, it's completely black. That's +1000 points alone.
But I still won't shell out 1200 + tax (if applicable) + shipping + CA recycling fees (if applicable) for it... unless some big gnu/linux distro decides to adopt it as a very stable platform (that would be interesting but it would require a lot of work).
Tina Darby @ Jul 8th 2008 12:28AM
This company needs to hire a better Photoshopper. Anyone else see the lines that look like cracks on the monitor? Not to mention, how the flower picture's dimensions do not fit with the monitor itself
Ethan @ Jul 8th 2008 8:09AM
They copied the chin!
neofolklore @ Jul 8th 2008 8:56AM
the 8400 is fail, but it is black, and black is always good... when it comes to PCs.
(no comment on consoles though)
celerysword @ Jul 8th 2008 9:45AM
"Avertec" looks a lot like the word "Average". Methinks it wasn't the smartest choice of brand names.
They should have gone with Adequatec or Marginaltec. Or maybe just Polaroid.
Magallanes @ Jul 8th 2008 10:21AM
Geforce 8400 can sound impressible for many users but is worst rather many old Geforce 7xxx and 6xxx graphics card.
whiskey @ Jul 9th 2008 7:22PM
Load up Leopard, get the averatec name off, put some apple shaped stickers... impress your friends!
Hey Averatec: Preload this baby with Ubuntu and shave us some $150 to $200 off the price tag!!!
Clak @ Jul 11th 2008 11:53PM
