Sidekick Gecco to be christened Sidekick 2008?
A number of shots have surfaced of an upcoming Sidekick that we've alternately known as the Gekko and Gecco, but the rumor du jour on the naming front is that we'll actually be calling it "Sidekick 2008" by the time it launches (later this month if we're lucky). The grainy photography shows a device looking roughly like what we expect the new model to look like -- but more interestingly, it shows the phone wearing a variety of different shells, some of which rock as much bedazzlement as a Swarovski one-off. Pretty cool. Oh, and don't bother trying to go to sidekick.com.shells -- we did, and it isn't online yet.

seriously Tmobile, this is the best you can do, when att is about to launch the iphone, and both verizon and sprint are on their way getting touch diamond and pro. What is wrong with you guys?

Well I think you're forgetting about how many people actually use the sidekick. I don't know about you, but when I'm on the train or bus or at any social event, it sometime seems that everyone has a sidekick.
Would does T-Mobile have to try so hard to get into a crowded touch screen market, when they already found there niche - young kids and teenagers with money to spend! Not to mention the money they make off the ringtones ($2.49?!) and the Sidekick plan ($20/monthly for EDGE data and text).
I think T-Mobile is doing fine for itself, even if they are taking an awfully long time rolling out 3G data!
Slawek @ Jul 10th 2008 9:15AM

I though the $2.49 ring tones went to danger.
M@rT!n @ Jul 10th 2008 8:27AM
people are still going to buy the sidekick just to have it and also because they are stupid and dont know that they are paying for the same outdated, "behind technology" software, just in a different design casing!!
Pochi @ Jul 10th 2008 8:33AM
"...some of which rock as much bedazzlement as a Swarovski one-off. Pretty cool."
Geez. Fall asleep for a few hours and the definition of "cool" changes right out from under ya. Could someone please define this new variation on the word for me?

I just threw up a little.

Gekkos in Metal Gear Solid 4 are awesome.
This should come with the cow moo sound as a ringtone.

I really love the Sidekick. The form factor is totally dope, and not to sound old but I hate touch screens. Haptics ftw.
But with that said, this better be a more capable device. Every new sidekick just seems like an iteration of the same tired platform.
Peter F @ Jul 10th 2008 8:49AM
I'd buy it if it was called Sidekick 2009
Travis @ Jul 10th 2008 8:52AM
anyone else hate all the stupid teens running around with these acting like morons, I for one, do
Smacksmackums @ Jul 10th 2008 9:57AM
No more than I hate the stupid teens/young adults/adults running around with the iphone and acting like morons.

freako. You people seriously need to get a grip. the sidekick is just as amazing as the iPhone. so is the fuss about it doesn't have a "mulittouch" screen, it isn't locked onto att, and it doesn't have a MobileMe system that crashes.? huh guys?
Eric M. @ Jul 10th 2008 8:55AM
Well according to Webster's dictionary, "Cool" in this sense refers to T-Mobile being able to only change the form factor of their cash cow and still be able to milk their market.
Slawek @ Jul 10th 2008 9:13AM
I bet you those grainy pictures were taken with a sidekick.
Joe @ Jul 10th 2008 9:54AM
I have a Sidekick, honestly I don't see what all the fuss is about. It does its job, and when compared to most other cell providers it's considerably cheaper. Sure the EDGE network is a piece of crap, and sure, the lack of Wi-Fi keeps me from fast page loads even when I'm next to an open wireless network... so what if the locked OS means that if I want to hear a song play when it rings, even if it's a song that I wrote, I'll have to pay $2.50 (Kind of ironic, considering that when we're in a period where most kids don't pay for their music anyway). So what if the thing's a gigantic plastic brick way too big to fit into anyone's jeans, let alone their sister's (which they're probably wearing). So what if, while being probably the biggest cell phone on the market, they still couldn't find a place to cram in GPS.
er... what was my point?....
Oh right! I can't wait for that 3G iPhone to be released for T-Mobile!

I used to own the Sidekick 2 and at the time is was a great device. Sadly there has not been much innovation since then. I think the Sidekick does have a niche with teens but since Microsoft has now acquired Danger, can we not get to work on a business centric model. I for one believe that the keyboard of the Sidekick 2 is unrivaled, even with big hands, the button spacing was great.
UberAdept @ Jul 11th 2008 6:17AM
What kind of Marketing moron names a product after the year when it is released in the second half of that year? Maybe he/she used to work for EA's sports division.....

Windows 95 was released in September.

Its not called sidekick 2008. its called sidekick (2008). its simply named Sidekick and thats it. the 2008 is to differentiate it from the first Sidekick years ago.

Say what you will about the Sidekick line up but ever since it's first release way back in the day people have loved it. Especially for it's "hollywood" cool factor when you would see celebs everywhere on one. Sure more celebs are talking on their Blackberry or iPhones now, but that doesn't mean people still don't love the Sidekick. I know a ton of people who have the LX now that never owned any of the previous Sidekick models before. All the people I know love theirs. The data plan is extremely cheap even though it's a bit slow, but it's the best pricing plan out there. Most carriers charge $20 just for texting. But with the Sidekick plan you get more than just that. And the AIM client on the phone is the best I've ever seen compared to other devices versions. I've owned every Sidekick since the SK2, and yes even the SKid. And I would totally get this one now if I hadn't "Paris Hilton" out my current LX. See below. And yes it's really mine. lol -------->

I've been waiting to upgrade my sidekick2 for years and I'm so happy to find it's the perfect time to do so, seeing as the new Sidekick has more features for a fraction of the cost of the LX. The upgrades to the previous sidekicks have hardly been upgrades at all, rather just cosmetic makeovers.
I switched to a blackberry knock off late last year and absolutely HATED it. The sidekick shortcuts, keyboard, and cheap sidekick service plan were always extremely convenient. In the end, I went back to my sidekick2.
Now to wait for my new Sidekick (2008) to be shipped!
