Wii gets custom firmware, purported PSP emulator

It looks like there's been a couple of developments on the entirely unofficial Wii activities front in the past few days, including one that seemingly delivers as promised and one that remains a bit of a mystery. That former item comes courtesy of Waninkoko, who has released what is purported to be the "first custom firmware for the Wii," which apparently allows writable DVDs to be read in emulators. In related news, the folks from TeamShift have released that tantalizing image above of what they claim to be a working PSP emulator for the Wii although, given that it can only muster between 4 and 8 frames per second, "working" doesn't exactly mean "playable." They are promising to deliver a beta version that brings games up to their normal speed, however, although they're unsurprisingly not making any promises about when we can expect that.

If this is true, wow. http://www.metacritic.com/games/psp/alpha/
Pengadget @ Jul 18th 2008 1:08PM
First!
If only wii had better games it would be the perfect system. For now imma stick to the 360.
Shadowise @ Jul 18th 2008 1:30PM
Fail... nice try though.
rock99rock @ Jul 18th 2008 1:10PM
Wow! The Wii could use this boost in resolution :)
Phoenix @ Jul 18th 2008 1:21PM
...boost in resolution? explain to me how the resolution is talked of in any way in this article.
yode @ Jul 18th 2008 1:36PM
wtf does resolution have to do with the console?
rock99rock @ Jul 18th 2008 2:09PM
Obviously over both your heads. I'm not gonna hinder the joke by explaining it. Good luck!
azuravian @ Jul 18th 2008 2:27PM
I assume he's making a joke that the PSP has higher res graphics than the Wii. He is right that having to explain a joke ruins it. He is wrong if he made any assumption that his joke was funny.
Phoenix @ Jul 18th 2008 2:34PM
Yeah I got what he was trying to say, I decided it was so dumb that he must have had some other meaning. It's not funny, at all.
Blue43Fan @ Jul 18th 2008 2:36PM
Alright fine, I'll hinder the joke then. He's taking a crack at the Wii by implying that the resolution of PSP games is higher than that of Wii games, even though PSP games are made for the small PSP screen. So even though the games are stretched out beyond belief on your TV screen, it's still at a better resolution than playing regular Wii games. Get it? :)
GerbilSoft @ Jul 18th 2008 6:37PM
Because, as we all know, the PSP's 480x272 resolution is vastly greater than the Wii's 640x480 (or 852x480 in widescreen mode). It's basic mathematics!
MC Double Def DP @ Jul 18th 2008 4:33PM
Can I please get further analysis of this joke before I scroll down to other comments?
rock99rock @ Jul 18th 2008 4:44PM
Awww sorry guys. I wasn't making fun of you and your purchases. I have a Wii, and thought it was hilarious. (Reminds self there is no humor in Wii comment section).
Hellios @ Jul 18th 2008 1:12PM
Why would anyone write an emulator to run on some shitty 800 mhz CPU when they could write it to run on any 2ghz+ multiple-core cpu instead?
Oh wait... I was just trolled by a 12 year old frenchie.
8/10
fischju @ Jul 18th 2008 1:28PM
It isn't true. At all.
theapple @ Jul 18th 2008 1:42PM
A 360 and a wii. What a good combination that guy has got.
Ninjakamster (PS360 FTW!) @ Jul 18th 2008 1:42PM
How about a PSP emulator for the PS3 or 360? : )
thedesolate1 @ Jul 18th 2008 4:45PM
how bout we get hacking first?
El Taco @ Jul 18th 2008 1:47PM
8fps is playable. Try to count to 8 in one second. It's not that slow actually.
Blue43Fan @ Jul 18th 2008 2:41PM
No.
andres @ Jul 18th 2008 6:43PM
if i cant count that many in one second, then its too slow
24 minimum
computer.dude.28 @ Jul 18th 2008 1:50PM
Anyone else notice that it's running the PSP emulator at 7 frames per s e c o n d...
DefPo3t @ Jul 18th 2008 1:56PM
nyone else bother to RTFA
computer.dude.28 @ Jul 18th 2008 2:32PM
Whoops, seem to have missed that..
Thanks for pointing that out, DefPo3t, and for being oh so polite.
digitallysick @ Jul 18th 2008 1:58PM
When they get this up and running it might be time to buy a nintendo wii again ( i sold my last one)
Pochi @ Jul 18th 2008 2:19PM
I'd call that sell a smart move.
norman.513 @ Jul 18th 2008 2:01PM
It's fake look at how the picture in the screen blends with the tv and how the frames look different in distances.
Phour ZwanZig @ Jul 18th 2008 9:41PM
Thats what I was thinking.. I swore I just saw this image the otherday with something else on the screen..
Prob just a Photoshop..
yuuuu @ Jul 18th 2008 2:06PM
How about a working psp emulator for commercial games *at all*?
Pochi @ Jul 18th 2008 2:18PM
First of all, yeah fucking right. Guess what, I hacked my Wii to emulate PS3. Tell the world.
And second of all, who would want this anyway? Why would you want to play portable games at home? Play games at home that you CAN'T get on the go. Then play your portable games when you leave. It makes no sense to play a PSP game on a Wii.
Even though it's BS anyway.
Aaron @ Jul 18th 2008 2:36PM
That screenshot looks ridiculously fake.
foo.bar @ Jul 18th 2008 2:54PM
i agree, and so do a bunch of other people:

Lucien @ Jul 18th 2008 3:25PM
thats cool, if its real
dudeInAmerica @ Jul 18th 2008 5:21PM
So the DCemu (dreamcast) site is announcing a PSP (playstation portable) emulator for the Wii (Wii)..
My head asplode
Darkest Daze @ Jul 18th 2008 5:42PM
It may be the crappy picture, but it kind of looks like the Wii's power LED is orange, indicating "stand-by", not "on".
Gneekman @ Jul 19th 2008 1:58AM
Maybe it's just me, but I can't tell the difference between the particular colors used for "standby" and "on" for the Wii.
Oh, wait, it is just me. Because I am a bit colorblind. Argh.
coolbho3000 @ Jul 18th 2008 7:45PM
The custom firmware uses copyrighted Nintendo code and is illegal to distribute. Besides, barely anything is modified, and for now all it can do is allow disc dumping and reading from a burned disc in an unmodded Wii (although piracy cannot be enabled using the same method).
The PSP emulator is obviously fake.
dmunky @ Jul 18th 2008 8:18PM
In Soviet Russia, Nintendo consoles emulate PSP games.
andres @ Jul 18th 2008 6:43PM
no no,
in soviet russia, psp emulates wii
Kurian @ Jul 18th 2008 9:53PM
1. The PSP cannot be properly emulated because the hardware decryption algorithms are COMPLETELY unknown. Its not possible to run commercial PSP games without game specific modifications to the emulator.
2. The kernel is continuously updated every now and then by Sony and new games need newer kernels because they use functions not present in older kernels.
3. The best you can do is run PSP Homebrew in an emulator because you only need to emulate the execution environment instead of the rest of the decryption stuff etc.
4. If you don't know jack, don't argue out of your ass, and STFU.
Crooked Style @ Jul 19th 2008 6:59PM
How about a Wii emulator on the PSP? I bet PSP hardware is better than the weed i mean Wii.
Yes im ranting because i can't find one to buy.
Dustin @ Jul 23rd 2008 1:39PM
This is definitely a hoax.. nocash doesn't have a PSP emu, and even if there was a proof-of-concept, it would be on the site http://nocash.emubase.de/
