Screen Grabs: Nokia's XpressMedia 5800 "Tube" plays big role in The Dark Knight
Screen grabs chronicles the uses (and misuses) of real-world gadgets in today's movies and TV. Send in your sightings (with screen grab!) to screengrabs at engadget dt com.

Even for gadget freaks, it was tough to take one's attention away from the outstanding action that filled The Dark Knight from beginning to end, but when Morgan Freeman had to hand over his Nokia XpressMedia 5800 (or Tube, as it were) at a stop in Hong Kong, we had to take a moment and gush. Nokia's still-not-official handset had a few critical scenes where it was highlighted, though we'd wager it was only viewable for 4 to 5 seconds in total. Beyond that, Nokia's peculiarly designed 6630 (circa 2004) was Gordon's handset of choice, which we risked an MPAA thug kneecapping in order to also snag and host up below. It's not really important that you go see it for a live shot of the Tube (though the incentive is nice), just make sure you go. Soon.

Best portrayal of a comic book character: Ledger's The Joker. Thematically satisfying, too.
Cesar Cardoso @ Jul 19th 2008 10:06AM
Best Batman movie ever, best superhero movie ever. Period. Take that, Marvel!
Ledger makes THE Joker. Nobody will make a better Joker than Heath.
Mr.Tech @ Jul 19th 2008 1:11PM

Rachel Dawes dies. Finally. Also Harvey Dent dies too, but Two-Face lives on? Also, Joker lives, but Heath Ledger died...

notjoel @ Jul 19th 2008 3:06AM
blast, I was really hoping to get the "thanks" tab when I emailed it in :(
(totally badass movie though, even if I slept through a shoot in the morning)
Chris P. @ Jul 19th 2008 3:07AM
First off: LOVED THE MOVIE: Ledger, Bale, Eckhart, Nolan : You are all geniuses in your craft.
Second: Saw the Nokia device steal the show in terms of tech/phone/batman gadgets. The movie protrayed it as a phone, not just as some silly Nokia PMP. It would be really cool if the phone did what the movie made it do. (no movie spoiler here ;)
I wonder how much Nokia paid to get that kind of coverage in the movie?
Also, FYI, the Nokia store on 57th Street and 5th Ave NYC has a completely redone façade with a whole Batman theme. It says "Who's side are YOU on?" and has the face of the Joker and Batman split by some "torn up Gotham" poster.
Phoenix @ Jul 19th 2008 4:43PM
O.o when was the Tube EVER gonna be a PMP? it's a damn PHONE!
Yuri @ Jul 19th 2008 8:07PM
The day phones turn into what they did in the movie is the day I abandon all technology and live in the wild with nothing but some fishing line, a hook, hatchet, and Swedish firesteel
F.H Mip @ Jul 19th 2008 3:31AM
Nokia's where everywhere and can't wait till Nokia starts to roll out those s60 TS phones. Movie kicked ass!!
Michael @ Jul 19th 2008 3:38AM
Nokia fanboy here and I didn't notice ANY of the Nokia phones.
I'm slacking.
Or the movie really was just that good.
Alex @ Jul 19th 2008 7:09PM
"Nokia fanboy"
Haha. Good one.
stuart @ Jul 19th 2008 3:54AM
RIAA, now why would they care if you were taking pictures of a movie in the theaters. I am sure you meant MPAA, right? Then again they are all just a bunch of greedy corporate lobby groups right?
Prokanda @ Jul 19th 2008 4:27AM
it was even more amazing then me and my friends had hoped.
such an amazing way for Heath to go out as well... this, honestly, is one of the best movies I've seen in recent memory.
worth the ticket price and then some.
hiko36 @ Jul 19th 2008 5:27AM
What is your name from... It seems familiar...
Prokanda @ Jul 19th 2008 12:34PM
maybe you just recognize it from another one of my posts... it's a name a made up over a decade ago so that I would have a name that no one else would. it means nothing as far as I know and it doesn't come from anything. =D
hiko36 @ Jul 21st 2008 3:28AM
I figure it reminded me of something from a book I read... Brain Plague I think...
[ W ] @ Jul 19th 2008 4:33AM
It was sitting next to a 8800/8801 :D Used to have it and loved it!
CCMCornell @ Jul 19th 2008 5:01AM
I think you meant an MPAA "kneecapping."
Mukul Sharma @ Jul 19th 2008 5:16AM
The last 2 pictures are of nokia 6630 and not nokia tube , nokia 5800 "tube" was used by morgan freeman in the movie n that to in just 2 scenes.
Colin Potter @ Jul 19th 2008 9:16AM
read the article before you comment.

*SPOILERS*
not that that really helps much :/
Florin @ Jul 19th 2008 7:37AM
On a related note, I was positive that the phone Rachel was using (backside visible for a nanosecond) was a Palm, either a Centro (more likely) or a Treo 680.
m @ Jul 19th 2008 1:11PM
I am so happy that I wasn't the only one who noticed that.
meggman @ Jul 19th 2008 4:04PM
ahh no... i'm pretty sure you were looking at the back side of the new Nokia E66 there.....
Steffen Jobbs @ Jul 19th 2008 8:39AM
I'll wait until Dark Knight hits DVD in a couple of weeks. Yawn.

If they wanted to get rid of the Joker so badly, they should have called for Hancock so he could shove the Joker's head up the commissioner's ass. I gotta admit that the Joker wears some nice white makeup. He sort of looks like a half-crazed geisha girl. As for Batman, he just likes playing with adult toys. I was hoping he was gonna whip out his Batman modified iPhone, but no luck.
Colin Potter @ Jul 19th 2008 9:17AM
shut up. thanks.
Glenn @ Jul 19th 2008 10:37AM
