Sort of. Pwnage Tool 2.0
can't handle 3G iPhone SIM unlocks just yet, though jailbreaking should work just fine, and we're also faced with the teensy little problem of the Dev Team's server being totally destroyed by downloads already -- mirror please? -- but the friendly little jailbreak app has finally been unleashed upon the earth. We'd never suggest trying out software like this right out of the gate, but, um, let us know how it goes, yeah?

Update: We're seeing mixed results so far in the comments, but no bricked phones to speak of. Always a good thing. Oh, and plenty of mirrors to be found in the comments, thanks guys!

lol it didn't even download for me. It just went from "starting..." to finished, but the files is 0 bytes...Once i can get it to download, I'll upload to my site and I'll post the link here. :)

Sorry to throw a bit of cold water on this, but unfortunately, all the cool 1.1.x apps that you can get from Installer won't run on 2.0 - d'oh!
Just FYI - after the 2.0 Pwnage is complete (def. not as easy yet as Ziphone/iNdependence), what you're left with is an icon for Cydia, which is the new replacement for Installer. It's still early days - most of what's available so far inside Cydia is unix tools & a few cosmetic skinning things. Nothing super-yummy yet like VideoRecorder, IntelliScreen, etc, etc. (but I'm sure that stuff will be coming, right? right??)
(No disrespect to the dev team meant, just wanted to set folks' expectations...)

To all you out there who think this is bad.
I have and iPhone 1st gen, and have had for a year.
however i live in a country that was yet to receive it until july 11th.
I have unlocked mine but deleted installer and i'm not running anything non apple or app store on it. how do you think i should go about getting an iPhone if it is'nt in my country i want it for a Phone not an iPod so unlocking using this is the only way i can get apples phone.

sorry for posting this here...but I know that a lot of learned OSX user frequent this blog. I want to ask a question:
Anybody know if you can get the free software "Lotus Symphony" for OSX. It is available for Windows and for Linux. I thought that this was multi platform software and figured that because there are so many developers out there developing for OSX that this would be out.
I love Symphony, and like to exercise my choice of the Office software I use.

Well apparently the iPhone 3g fail didn't stop 3+ million people from buying it. I (through a corprate viewpoint) would call it success. Just incase u havent done the calculation, ill do a minimal one for (att standpoint):
3000000 (iphones Bought) * 24(months in 2 year contract)* 70 (minimum plan price) = 5,040,000,000 or 5.04 bill.

Well, first of all woooosssshhh.
Also, from a "corporate" stand point, I would be more interested in how much the iPhone has cost ATT before wanting to know the profits. Since cost comes first and profits come second this is always more important.
I noticed your "math" did not include the cost of the iPhone itself, subsidies to Apple, the cost of service provided to customers over a 24 month agreement, marketing costs, or general overhead.

Maybe you're right about Windows Mobile phones being better than the iPhone. I know my avatar certainly loves his WinMo 6.1 handset. He still does WinMo programming work for Microsoft. And he's also happy to accept his salary in bananas.

Actually I think it jailbreaks 3G iPhones it just can't unlock them. This being based on what I've read the past week on the iPhone dev team blog.

Yes, but the link on the words "Pwnage Tool 2.0 can't handle 3G iPhones just yet" leads to Engadget's article on saying how the Pwnage Tool 2.0 won't be able to UNLOCK the iPhone 3G, not unable to jailbreak it.

If you're getting an error 6 while trying to restore the modified firmware in iTunes and the pwnage tool fails to put your iPhone 3G into DFU mode, you'll need to do the following:
mkdir “~/Library/iTunes/Device Support” where ~ is your user directory (usually your name)
Leave your iPhone unplugged until the pwnage tool tells you to plug it in.

It will Jailbreak the 3G, just not unlock it. They should have an update that will unlock soon though. Please post if anyone has any issues with their phones once they install this.

Well, everything from Installer is free and there are quite a few apps in there that arn't offered in the App store. A popular one is summerboard, in which you can theme your iphone with custom backgrounds and icons. But yeah, there are tons of apps on installer so it would be beneficial to be able to pull apps from installer and the app store. That's why a jailbreak for 2.0 firmware and iphone 3g is important to many people, even if they are using the carrier designated by apple. ATT is sweet so i don't even know why people jailbreak to use on t-mobile. tmobile is almost as a big a joke as sprint.

I really doubt we are going to see any of the applications that normally cost money in the app store be pirated, at least anytime soon. All the applications are wrapped with Fairplay DRM.

Wanna know why people use it on T-mobile? Because you pay $75 a month for 1000 minutes, unlimited nights and weekends, unlimited data, unlimited text. That would be right around $120 for AT&T. T-mobile also uses AT&T's 850/900 signal when in roaming so you do have coverage everywhere.

I use T-Mobile because ATT wanted $600 in order to give me a phone. I told ATT they were f*cking crazy and T-Mobile said welcome to the fold... Simple nuff for me.
