Windows iPhone 3G jailbreak tool released
Sure, it was already possible (if complicated) to jailbreak a first-gen iPhone running the 2.0 software under Windows, but this is the one-click tool all you crazy cats with those extra G's need if you don't have a Mac -- too bad no one's come up with a better name than "pwn" yet. Please, people. Let's do better.
PS.- As usual, you run the risk of totally destroying your phone mucking around with this stuff, so don't say we didn't warn you.
Update: winpwn.com is down already, mirrors in the comments!

Wow that's so cool.
If you keep up awesome stuff like this the mayor just might give you the key to Engadget City.
CUBSWILLWIN @ Jul 24th 2008 10:31AM
Is this gonna have Cydia instead of installer.app? There's a NO for me if thats true.
iPhoner @ Jul 24th 2008 3:43PM
You can download it faster from this mirror: http://www.iphone-hacks.com/downloads/file/115
mrmeku @ Jul 24th 2008 12:19AM
too bad there's still no reason to jail break yet unless your into command line shit or really want to teather.
DefPo3t @ Jul 24th 2008 12:28AM
the NES emulator has been rewritten for 2.0 so there is one reason
phoomp @ Jul 24th 2008 12:56AM
I'll totally be upgrading to 2.0 once the software and the App Store apps are at least as stable as 1.1.4 and the Jailbreak apps.
Oh, and once the majority of the App Store apps aren't "Turn your iPhone into a flashlight!!!"
hiko36 @ Jul 24th 2008 3:35AM
@ phoomp
For USD5.99 no less!!!
Glenn @ Jul 24th 2008 7:39AM
Actually the jailbreak version of the flashlight app on 2.0 increases to brightness to max, just like it did on 1.x.
Apple forbids devs from increasing the brightness via their apps

Digg it:

Any idea on when they are putting out an unlocking version?
Siddharth @ Jul 24th 2008 12:22AM
How much longer until the SIM is unlocked?
KoSoVaR @ Jul 24th 2008 12:24AM
Mirrored at theiphoneproject.org :) A great, great piece of software.
KoSoVaR @ Jul 24th 2008 12:24AM
eh, sorry.. http://theiphoneproject.org/index.php/downloads .. didn't see an edit button :)
Eric M. @ Jul 24th 2008 12:26AM
You didn't see it cause engadget believes "edit" buttons are soo Web 1.0.
Eric M. @ Jul 24th 2008 12:27AM
You didn't see because there isn't one. Engadget believes "edit" buttons are soo Web 1.0.
DefPo3t @ Jul 24th 2008 12:29AM
your apparently saw the "add you comment" button twice though
Eric M. @ Jul 24th 2008 12:24AM
Gotta love the hackers! Thanks!
Nehemiah @ Jul 24th 2008 12:27AM
whats wrong with pwn?
Darkroom @ Jul 24th 2008 12:30AM
i vote we revert to "own"... "pwn" is so xheesy...
DefPo3t @ Jul 24th 2008 12:28AM
Engadget please stop telling people that you can "destroy" / "brick:" your iphone with this and other applications, The only way to "brick" the iphone is to reflash the underlinig DFU OS with an incomplete image, which can not be done with this method or any previous released method. And even if that did somehow happen the iBooter interface should allow you to reflash it back to normal
John @ Jul 24th 2008 12:44AM
wow they even have an iBooter?
DefPo3t @ Jul 24th 2008 12:55AM
yes they do and i would link to the iphone linux site so you can read about the inner workings but since its cohosted on the same server as winpwn its not loading at the moment so heres an aritcle on it http://arstechnica.com/journals/apple.ars/2008/03/24/ibooter-firmware-console-released-for-iphone
and http://www.iphonelinux.org/index.php/IBooter if it will work for u
dan @ Jul 24th 2008 5:14AM
Ah yes, the iBooter. The world has no idea what it is, but it's definitely trendier than just a "regular" Booter. Also comes in pearl white, and enjoys volkswagens. Black versions will cost extra.
sepirioth @ Jul 24th 2008 3:01PM
Maybe not to you, but winpwn has wrecked many iphones i know of. TOTALY bricked them and it allowed the bad image to be written soo.....
andrew @ Jul 24th 2008 11:55PM
i think they are just trying to cover their legal asses
bob cobb @ Jul 24th 2008 12:35AM
my IPSW builder button is greyed out, I dont get what I have to do
DefPo3t @ Jul 24th 2008 12:38AM
did you install it over winpwn 1
or did you read the instructions where it says
"Do not install over winpwn 1.0, uninstall 1.0 then install 2.0
bob cobb @ Jul 24th 2008 12:41AM
Ive never done this before. Its on my new 3g iphone.
DefPo3t @ Jul 24th 2008 12:52AM
i would recommend going to the winpwn forums at cmw's other site and project @ http://iphonelinux.org/forum/ but its down from the sheer number of people download from his server
Chris @ Jul 24th 2008 2:34AM
I would wait for ziphone to support 2.0, this is serious stuff and you don't want to mess up your shinny new iphone.
Undead @ Jul 24th 2008 12:37AM
For some reason winpwn isn't workin for me I keep browsing for the ipsw and I'm getting an unknown file error
can anyone help me out?
iB3nji @ Jul 24th 2008 12:39AM
Considering the error is "unknown" sorry i cant help :)
sepirioth @ Jul 24th 2008 12:53AM
Im gonna wait for a new ziphone version, no matter how long it takes. was easiest one to use and unlocked all my friends phones with it.
DefPo3t @ Jul 24th 2008 1:02AM
while i agree with you that ziphone was THE simplest way to jailbreak and unlock the last generation of iphones I wouldn't count on zibree actually releasing a new version
Zak Skjaveland @ Jul 24th 2008 1:04AM
Ziphone is TRASH, read up a little you'll realize why.
hiko36 @ Jul 24th 2008 3:38AM
I've never had a problem with Zi.. I jailbroke my ipod touch twice with it and plan on jailbreaking my 1st gen iPhone once I get it...
ranova @ Jul 24th 2008 3:46PM
have fun joining a wireless network that also used ziphone. ZiPhone changes your mac address to something like 0z:0i:0b:0r:0i, and thats on every phone. Joining a network with the same mac address = problems. There are more things that makes ziphone horrible, read up on it
gbasaldua17 @ Jul 24th 2008 1:12AM
Okeey so this nice tool just erase all my music and make my ipod touch unredeable for itunes, thanks!
andrew @ Jul 24th 2008 11:55PM
if ppl insist on posting comments on shit they dont know about, could they at least use better spelling?
mani @ Jul 24th 2008 1:16AM
I'm new at this and ive got an iPod touch running 1.1.4 f/w I'm just wondering if this pwng tool will let me jailbreak it and allow
for me to get f/w 2.0 and if so how do I use this pwng tool?
Chris @ Jul 24th 2008 2:40AM
Download this than go to the http://thepiratebay.org/ and search for ipod touch firmware 2.0 and download it (you may have to get limewire, it'll ask you what you want to open the file with and thats what I clicked.) Let it download and save it to your desktop. Open winpwn and click IPSW builder and check "Install Cydia" than go to all the other settings and uncheck them. Then click "build ipsw" and find the ipod firmware you downloaded to your desktop and let that complete. Once thats done click ipwner and connect your ipod touch and let that do its business. Once thats done and your ipod is working fine, go into itunes and click restore and hold down shift at the same time and find the pwned pod firmware and it should work.
mani @ Jul 24th 2008 5:42PM
thanks so
much :D
Corey H @ Jul 24th 2008 1:17AM
sweet the mirrors are posted on winpwn.com

mani @ Jul 24th 2008 1:28AM
just wondering if anyone can help answer a few
questions
I have an iPod touch running 1.1.4 can I use the pwng tool to jailbreak it and wen get it to jail break will it give me f/w 2.0?
and how do I use this tool I have downloaded it
Thanks
Rick @ Jul 24th 2008 1:31AM
I pwned my iphone (1st gen) to 2.0 using the mac pwn tool, and works great. The reason? So I'm not just locked to the appstore, and can use cydia (which is an installer competitor), and can download many other utilities free.
Good job to everyone on the scene for their hardwork!

Doesn't work for me.
Would owning an Apple product increase my chances?
Chris @ Jul 24th 2008 2:44AM
It might, I haven't heard of anyone getting this to work on a Zune!
Decoy @ Jul 24th 2008 3:59PM
It works, but you can't make calls.
AltF @ Jul 24th 2008 1:41AM
"..but this is the one-click tool..." - this is still not a one-click tool. still requires all the following steps:
- 1) First create a custom IPSW using the IPSW Builder.
- 2) Click "Ipwner" and browse for the custom IPSW that you just created. This will pwn itunes and allow you to flash
Custom IPSW files via DFU mode
- 3) Once you have pwned Itunes, put your phone into DFU mode. If you don't know how to do this click Here.
- 4) Once you are in DFU mode Itunes will pop up and then you can hold shift and click restore and browse to your custom IPSW file.
we still need a GUI wrapper around it, i guess KineticX from iunlocked.org is working on it - http://www.iunlocked.org/mainsite/?p=21
Chris @ Jul 24th 2008 2:59AM
Is winpwn supposed to freeze right after this happens, I clicked ipwner and selected the custom pwned firmware and it opened itunes than froze a few seconds later and when I open it the ipwner button is greyed out.
