It's hard to say if we've ever laid eyes on a family of
portable hard drives with less vigor and pizazz, but Memorex isn't kidding around when it calls these things "essential." Boasting nothing more than the bare necessities, the new line of
TravelDrives arrives with 2.5-inch HDDs that pack 160GB, 250GB or 320GB of space. You'll find a USB 2.0 port and a flashing LED to keep you from dozing off, and there's even a few color options to choose from in case you're partial to Spring Blossom, Tropic Green, Caribbean Blue or Cool Silver. At least they start at just $89.99, right?

The starting price point isn't bad. Why all the hate?

Since it's nothing new?

It's a good price, and they aren't as fugly as some external drives out there, but last I was aware, Memorex wasn't in the hard drive business. Basically, Memorex is making HDD enclosures and sticking someone else's drives inside them. So whereas you know what you're getting when you buy an external HDD from WD or Seagate, you have no idea what kind of drive is inside these things.
So the real question is, who makes the drives that are in those enclosures? Who, ultimately, am I entrusting my data to?

They look kind of ugly. I like the WD Passport's design, clean and simple. Plus you can get the 320 GB passport on Ebay for about $100. I don't even know why Engadget bothers to mention these things. Its not like they are SSD based, or have some advanced Raid setup, or allow you to store 1TB in your pocket.
What I want to see is 1TB with an enclosure similar to the WD passport, support for USB 2.0, firewire, e-sata, with a built in USB retractable cable. And no need for an external power supply.
