Addonics Portable Dual Drive enclosure lets you RAID on the go
We've seen a couple tiny / portable RAID enclosures, but Addonics's new Portable Dual Drive enclosure is the smallest we've seen so far, with a compact stacked design that allows you to easily swap drives. The eSATA / USB 2.0 box supports RAID 0/1 and several other disk configs, and Addonics is hyping compatibility with SATA-to-CF adapters that'll let you build a crazy SSD RAID. Out now for $99.

is it possible to install an OS?
dennis @ Aug 7th 2008 2:10PM
I second the question. I wonder where the RAID software is located, if it's plug and play or there's a needed software interface, etc.
dennis @ Aug 7th 2008 2:13PM
Oops, should have RTFA.
It has hardware RAID, and is in fact plug and play. So, I don't see why one couldn't install an OS on it.

Yes... Via the eSATA. If youve built the machine yourself, you can route the eSATA external port to a "bootable" SATA port on the mobo and itll behave just like it was internal.

This could be interesting with a small form factor system, allowing RAID 0/1 while bringing the HDDs out of the case.
@BluesK1d
Couldn't you just set up the BIOS so that it boots from a USB or a regular eSATA port?

BRING ON THE 3.5" MODEL :)

The price isn't bad, not bad at all.
But the need for this is quite slim.

Wow, that's handy.
I wonder if it's any more / less reliable than a cheap buffalo raid station.
Bobthebuilder24 @ Aug 7th 2008 2:39PM
Wow i am so buying one of these

I dont see the point of this, since 2.5" drives are much slower than 3.5" ones. Least in SATA form.
And if you want somin kick ass for a SFF then get a 2.5 SAS drive like the Savvio. With an adapter if need be.
And if you want to use it for CF RAID, then they should make this soley for that i.e. no adapters needed. Since they will just add cost big time.
Release a CF 2 - 4 RAID version at a cheapo price and im on it.

Sweet just need this and two of the 2.5 Velociraptors. Then you have a high speed external storage device and a small cooking surface anywhere you go.

It's too bad that it requires a power supply. As a laptop warrior, I carry around 2 2.5 inch drives (WD Passport and home-built Ultra) and both run just fine off the USB. If they offered some sort of dual USB connection to get the 2 X 500 mA and run everything.
A 3 disk setup would be uber killer. Yeah, I know RAID 5 is slow, but it would be nice to only loose 33% of the disk space.
Still, props!
