Pirelli Cyber Tire adds some smarts to your slicks
Tire monitors are nothing new, but Pirelli's taking the idea a step farther by inserting sensors and microchips directly into the tires themselves. The Cyber Tire and Cyber Tire Lean can measure pressure, temperature and vehicle load, sending the information along using RFID. The self-powered Cyber Tire Lean, which will hit the market first in 2010, embeds the sensors in strip glued to the inner lining of the tire and communicates in one direction only; the proper Cyber Tire with directly embedded sensors will arrive later, and is being billed as an "intelligent tire" that will interface with vehicle systems like ABS and traction control to "correct wrong behavior in advance." Sure, okay -- but please tell us all this stuff can get switched off when we need to do some wicked burnouts, okay?[Via Autoblog]

Some questions before buying:
How much more will these tires cost?
Could it negatively impact performance?
What is the likelihood of damage to the circuitry while driving, mounting?
What modifications will I need to make to my car to interface with the tires?
scott @ Aug 29th 2008 12:19AM
most likely need a car pc. shouldn't damage the car's performance, considering pirelli is top of the line. and they'll cost WAYYYYY too much, and will probably come with its own software, etc.
PynkFloydd @ Aug 29th 2008 4:16PM
I've had Pirelli tires on my car and motorcycle and they are damn good tires. ...but, don't expect all-season performance. I've never ran across a true all-season Pirelli tire (at least not in my size). The biggest problem with Pirelli was paying $1200-2000/set (around $400-500 for motorcycle). Depending on the weather and speed rating, you could be paying this within 12k miles.
If you're going to take your car/motorcycle on the track, it'd definitely pay off. I've almost wrecked my bike a few times by not being at optimal temperature in mild weather.
I don't expect this to be a mass market product. I'd imagine that a set with embedded chips would run in the $2k+ range.

Been working too hard? Bit tired?
It is spelt "Tyre"!
Sheesh... hello copy editors?
ScOObyDoo @ Aug 28th 2008 9:24PM
No it isn't. Unless you are British.
Of course, I could be wrong, in which case someone better alert the good folks at Goodyear:

phanbouy @ Aug 28th 2008 9:24PM
hi Richard, mind if I call you Dick? um, last I checked there were different versions of english with different spelling. unless you're being cheeky. that's a british word.
Reader @ Aug 28th 2008 9:35PM
Don't mind him phanbouy, he's just angry mum didn't make him his tea and crumpets.
Richard Ford @ Aug 28th 2008 9:59PM
No worries. You can call me buttercup if it inflates your phallus as such. Unless you know what pirelli is (I didn't) the title is misleading due to the poor spelling.
phanbouy @ Aug 29th 2008 12:07AM
Dick, leave my johnson out of this, will you buttercup? Right!
phanbouy @ Aug 29th 2008 12:10AM
but seriously Richie, i'm right witcha. i remember the first time i saw tire spelled "tyre". i was so confused man, i thought it was slang for Madonna's beaver.
Richard Ford @ Aug 29th 2008 4:06AM
Nah me thinks Madonna's beaver is named phanny.
ScOObyDoo @ Aug 28th 2008 9:22PM
Screw this. It's bad enough when your engine control computer crashes, imagine how it'll suck when all 4 wheels BSOD on you when you are doing 90 on the highway!
whiskey @ Aug 28th 2008 10:21PM
Unless my tires twit me when they are getting slashed or robbed... they are not smart enough!
Bryant @ Aug 28th 2008 11:56PM
Why the hell would you want to do burnouts with these tires?
Imaperson @ Aug 29th 2008 12:17AM
Man. tire pressure sensors are easy enough to break when mounting/dismounting tires. I wonder how much fun this will be.
Jason @ Aug 29th 2008 12:49AM
Forget this shit, I want the Tweel.
Colin Potter @ Aug 29th 2008 2:43AM
Will you be taking the Batpod sir?
