Canon's SX10 IS 20x wide-angle zoom and 14.7 megapixel G10

Canon's just getting started with the full-frame 5D mkII this morning. Demonstrating its chops downmarket with its PowerShot range, Canon just announced its 10 megapixel SX10 IS with 20x wide-angle zoom lens and 2.5-inch folding LCD along side a 14.7 megapixel G10 with 5x wide-angle zoom lens and 3-inch LCD. Both feature Canon's optical image stabilization and DIGIC 4 image processing with face and motion detection, face detection self-timer, servo AF, and intelligent contrast correction. The SX10 IS is powered by 4x AA batteries and should hit shelves in late October for $400 -- the G10 should pop for $500 at about the same time.

Don't forget the SX1 also!
Musouka @ Sep 17th 2008 6:22AM
It doesn't seem that the SX1 IS is coming to the U.S.
It is listed on Canon Europe site:
http://www.canon-europe.com/For_Home/Product_Finder/Cameras/Digital_Camera/PowerShot/index.asp
But couldn't be found on the U.S. site:

have the G7, heck of a camera, love the classic look too, glad they kept it.

looks like the G10 got a major control overhaul. hello misshapen brick!
Ran @ Sep 17th 2008 2:27AM
Canon really got caught with their pants down on these cams. People will flock to the Panny LX3 instead of the G10, and Canon put a crappy EVF on the SX1 instead of on the cheaper sister SX10. Can't believe what the Canon marketers get away with. :(
Chris Anderson @ Sep 17th 2008 2:44AM
Mmmmm...... i own a lowly S3-iS right now, and that SX10 looks absolutely DELICIOUS..... the wide-angle is something i need more often than not, and it's a nice bump in resolution. I love the ease of use in these cameras, but i enjoy the fact that i'm able to change shutter speed, aperture, and perhaps finally do exposure bracketing!

15MP on a tiny 1/1.7" sensor? I guess Canon is still in the megapixel race.
tony @ Sep 17th 2008 4:17AM
THE END of the megapixel race is near.
Here are the facts:
Canon G10’s sensor-size is 7.6mm x 5.32mm.
Panasonic G1’s sensor-size is 18mm x 13.5mm
Which means the sensor-size of the Panasonic m4/3rds new G1 is SIX TIMES BIGGER in area than the Canon G10. Why on earth would you drop $500 on something that has a sensor six times less?
DSLR sensors with high-resolution/real-time EVFs in compacts is the future. I guess the G10 will be the last relic of the let’s cram more mp in small-sensor to rip customers off game.

I sold my Canon G9 after a week for that very reason.
The tiny sensor with huge resolution provided horrible low light performance.
Loved pretty much everything else about the camera, though.
Sebastien @ Sep 17th 2008 3:02AM
This news should be filed under "canon" tag too

I'm wondering why the SX10 IS is powered by 4x AA batteries and not by a rechargable Li-ion Battery.
Adam @ Sep 17th 2008 6:49AM
I used AA rechargeables for a while with the older Canons. But I still find the proprietary Li-on batteries better because it usually means they can make the camera smaller. Buy a couple of off brand backups, and you're set.

I got excited there, for a second, but then I looked closer and realized they *hadn't* brought the flip-out LCD back to the G-series. =/ I think this will go down in history as one of the lamest G-series revisions... more MP.. is Canon insane?.. I already wish my G9 had *less* MP, so that the ISO levels wouldn't suck as much.

I'm continually amazed and pissed that Canon .... and every other camera maker .... has dropped the articulating LCD .... aka swivel, twist-&-turn, etc. LCD. I was hoping to see it return with the G10, but am happy to see it on the new SX models. And it's great to see it on the new Panasonic G1.
Why do all camcorder come with an articulating LCD and yet they are very rare on still cameras? These displays have the same advantages with cameras as with camcorders. In fact, I'd bet that camcorder buyers would be very upset if camcorders started coming out without an articulating display. I would have purchased a Canon DSLR ... or Nikon DSLR ... a long time ago if it had one of these ever-so-useful articulating displays.
Besides being able to very easily and accurately shoot low ground shots, high over-the-crowd shots and self portraits, I especially like that I can lock the screen-side of the display inward for full protection when carrying the camera slung over my shoulder, or in my pocket .... with full protection of the screen from bangs, scratches or breakage. Also, the addition of an articulating display adds very little cost, weight or size to the overall camera. This is such a no-brainer.

@ Ran - You are right on.
Lumix DMC-LX3 has a f2-f2.8 aperture (24-60mm).
You can do 720p (and now you have the other piece of the "film look" besides the 24p which is a fast lens with a large AP that can give you a shallower DOF).
The Canon G10 starts @ 2.8 and goes to f4.5 while the LX3 is @ f2-f2.8.
Essentially the G10 maximum aperture (@ 2.8 where the lens allows the most light) pales in comparison to the LX3 which at it's darkest (2.8) is as bright as the G10 is at it's maximum AP of 2.8. It all goes down hill from then (2.8-4.5) for the G10.
I will give it to the G10 that it has a better focal range but for a pocket cam it would be best to focus on a fast lens and a focal range of 24-60 like the LX3. These cams are going to be used indoors a lot, outdoors for landscapes, vacations (where you need a lens that is as wide as possible). This is another place where the G10 failed with it's 28mm wide end. I know a lot of photogs that use a 24L on their 5d very often. Panasonic got it right on with the 24mm on the LX3 for the wide end. 4mm may not sound like much but when you can't back up and your back is against the wall it will really matter.

Features aside, the G series camera is considerably uglier for 2008.
Jason Litka @ Sep 17th 2008 11:37AM
Sorry, but there's no way I'd buy a camera with a 20x zoom. Let's ignore the fact that the optics have got to be horrible for a zoom like that and focus on the fact that the average person buying this is probably not capable of hand-holding the camera still enough to actually take a photo zoomed all the way in. Even with IS, which probably only gives you 3 stops on this camera, regardless of what they might claim, you're still going to need to have an awful steady hand or a tripod (which kind of defeats the purpose of a P&S), even out in the sun. Better start praying that you're not shooting a moving target as well, otherwise that IS is going to be worthless.
The G10 looks nice though. I've still got a G2 at home that I break out occasionally.
Martin @ Sep 18th 2008 9:32PM
I don't agree.
Firstly, the move from 12x to 20x in this range extended at the wide and the long end. (36-432 (35mm equiv.) now becomes 28-560. So the long end had only gone up 1.3x
Secondly I have taken around 12000 shots with my S2 IS. Many of these are sports shots at maximum zoom and all hand-held. With the weight of the camera and the IS it is all good especially in good light.
The new series seem to have faster IS, so I really can't see why it won't work
eric @ Sep 28th 2008 3:46PM
Can the G10 zoom during video?
Flores @ Sep 30th 2008 8:47AM
I am satisfied with my canon S5 Is. The very weakness of Canon PS series is too much noise in low light and high ISO. I can not shoot in ISO 400 and higher in low light only to avoid too much noises. Does PS SX 10 IS have less noise in ISO 1.600?
