PlayOn Media Server streams Netflix to PS3 / Xbox 360 today
Forget the lames waiting for a New Xbox Experience to bring Netflix streaming to the console, the latest edition of Media Mall's PlayOn Media Server beta includes Watch Instantly support right now. An update notification should be on the way to anyone already testing things out, the impatient can grab it from the website. Also streaming Hulu, CBS, YouTube, ESPN and others to the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, HP MediaSmart TV or other DLNA hardware (Nintendo Wii's still on the coming-soon list) the presence of Netflix (and the recent Watch Instantly additions) gives even more reason to check it out. Since its still in beta don't be surprised to find a few issues, but considering our smooth sailing so far, the list of reservations over its $30 price tag (after the 60 day free trial period is over) is rapidly shrinking.

Wii doesn't need this.
It can already play 1980's most technologicaly advanced NES games.
deyanimay @ Oct 1st 2008 7:47PM
I think I've seen this statement before followed by the word "troll." Just a hunch though.
turtlesoup @ Oct 1st 2008 8:18PM
Flashpoint a troll?? Nah, that's crazy talk.
Kspraydad @ Oct 1st 2008 7:35PM
Sad Canadian.
Andrew @ Oct 1st 2008 7:35PM
Would this by any change get around Location based filtering for these services? :-)
Hmm? hmm?
huh huh?
Yes? Yes?
Kspraydad @ Oct 1st 2008 10:19PM
No...thus my Sad Canadian comment.

There are seven links in this post, and none of them lead to the software. Nice job, Engadget.
Paul @ Oct 1st 2008 8:04PM
Have you tried the Read link?
Richard Lawler @ Oct 1st 2008 8:04PM
The "read" link and the big picture in the middle lead to MediaMall's website. You have to register to download the software, there isn't a direct link to it. If you have trouble finding it drop them an email, I'm sure they can help you out.
Paul @ Oct 1st 2008 8:03PM
I highly recommend Play On Media Server as it does work like a charm! So easy to use! I like it for what it can do with Hulu!
El Taco @ Oct 1st 2008 9:19PM
How do I sign up to get paid to advertise like you do?
Philippe @ Oct 1st 2008 8:18PM
Ok, ok, interesting... but where's Hulu and Amazon's WAB on Roku's player?!?
Brent @ Oct 1st 2008 8:23PM
To bad I think the website is down to even attempt to download it :(
D3FAULT @ Oct 1st 2008 10:38PM
It's running REALLY slow, but I'm downloading it as I type this. Keep trying.
Kevitivity @ Oct 1st 2008 8:26PM
Does PlayOn have a Mac version?
Jander @ Oct 1st 2008 8:40PM
Nope. :(
William @ Oct 2nd 2008 1:39PM
I've gotten it to work with Parallels on my MacBook Pro. Awesome!
Rick @ Oct 2nd 2008 7:02PM
I setup a folder for video in Sites, and I can access and stream xvid to my ps3's web browser. Sadly no hulu or netflix though.
Jander @ Oct 1st 2008 8:41PM
This really pushes the PS3 over the edge for me as the de facto media machine in my house. Hulu + Netflix + Sony's Video renting/buying service + blu-ray = crazy delicious.
Hife @ Oct 1st 2008 9:25PM
iiiiindeed
KC @ Oct 1st 2008 11:23PM
While I really like this upgrade from PlayOn, the ability to play these streams should be done natively on the PS3 without having the need to leave a PC on to transcode the video on the fly.
duke @ Oct 1st 2008 8:54PM
All we need now is someone to give us a fix for the DLNA errors (4405) on the PS3.
Darren Tilley @ Oct 1st 2008 9:08PM
PlayOn, apply directly to the forehead...
vitriolix @ Oct 1st 2008 9:17PM
Or you can use this free Media Center plugin to stream netflix to your XBox now:

Kristian @ Oct 1st 2008 9:19PM
Anyone have an alternate download? Their site is already swamped.
Break @ Oct 1st 2008 9:25PM
you know, i used to love running playon on my computer till i noticed it hogging up so many resources... i have 4 gigs of memory but it should for no reason take up more memory then firefox with 12 tabs open
haha
i mean tversity runs quietly and unnoticed in my system tray, why can't play on do the same?
Marshall @ Oct 1st 2008 9:39PM
Confirmed to work on the Popcorn Hour also, you can see a video of it in action at Youtube and metacafe. Just search for "real ht info"

Excellent release. This release fixes a lot of the bugs found on previous versions.

in the words of Ben Stein..."wooooow". I'm elated, to say the least...not we're not stuck w/ the PSN's paltry choice of content.

Another sad Canadian......
jim @ Oct 1st 2008 11:53PM
I can't get hulu, netflix, and youtube doesnt seem to work. ESPN and the cbs one works great i really like it. Now i haven't read the manual yet because the website must be slammed. ill lok at it tomorrow. anyone else having problems? I do think this program has some promise.
Shantanu @ Oct 2nd 2008 12:28AM
I am getting Netflix corrupted data error and also hulu videos are not working. I tried randomly youtube and CBS they were working fine.
Evan @ Oct 2nd 2008 2:22AM
So does anyone think this will get canned by Microsoft? The announcement at E3 made it seem like they had an 'exclusive' agreement with Netflix to be the only console to provide this functionality.
I personally expect MS to pounce quickly to shut this down. Just a guess though.
jhutchinson4 @ Oct 2nd 2008 6:05AM
Their site must be getting hammered. When I can get on it (which is spotty in itself) I can't do anything with it. This might be something that will have to wait until another day. Sounds good, though.
Eric @ Oct 2nd 2008 11:44AM
Yikes. Domain has been suspended now.
I still can't get this to work on my server. Keep getting the "Not Found" error message.
Jko @ Oct 2nd 2008 11:54AM
Don't suppose someone can upload the setup file to a rapidshare or something? Would really love to give this a shot.
bsdgeek @ Oct 2nd 2008 2:11PM
I am uploading the setup file I downloaded last night to rapidshare for you guys
bsdgeek @ Oct 2nd 2008 2:24PM
I may have to do this later
