We heard
rumblings of such a partnership last fall, and now it appears that those rumblings were indeed legit:
Amazon and
TiVo are teaming up to get Unbox video downloads into your living room. The two companies will be announcing a limited test run today for an unspecified number of customers, with a full rollout expected "later this year." This of course comes on the heels of
Wal-Mart's big announcement of all 6 movie studios inside its new download store, and it appears Amazon is quite aware of its content shortage. "We have a strong relationship with Disney," says Amazon's Bill Carr, "It hasn't been worked out yet, but it will be." TiVo CEO Tom Rogers commented on Sony, saying they've "indicated they're looking to be part of this at time of launch." So nothing set in stone, but Wal-Mart won't be able to just sit back and rake in the dough, especially with Amazon and
soon Apple delivering these shows to the TV. Of course, the Amazon / TiVo edge is that instead of users springing $300 for an Apple TV, they can just turn on that broadband-enabled TiVo of theirs -- 1.5 million of which are already in homes. Unfortunately, DirecTV and forthcoming Comcast TiVo customers will be SOL. No additional hardware is needed, and there won't be any sort of service fee, just the existing iTunes-esque Amazon prices. Oh, and that
TiVo / Netflix dealio a while back? Rogers says they went with Amazon thanks to its large customer network and large catalog of distribution rights, something
Netflix couldn't deliver.

AppleTV. Apparently... some think it's not that crazy.

If the resolution is decent, I'd use this. Download a movie while I'm at work, watch it when I get home!

So here's a question: Will the Unbox videos work from a Mac to a TiVo? I know that Unbox doesn't work on Macs, but I have to assume that one could still download the file and let it reside on the Mac so the TiVo could see it.

I believe the movie is downloaded directly to the TiVo (you'll need to use the computer to access Amazon's website to make your movie selection), so Mac users should be fine.

This could be much bigger than *just* another way to get movies to our TVs - http://blog.nextblitz.com/blog/2007/02/amazon.html

I'd be pretty suprised if it required the use of your pc at all. I can't imagine that it can't all be accomplished via a tivo interface.

This is huge for Tivo and Amazon. They will be the first to offer rental downloads direct to a set-top box. The potential is enormous if they do it right. I wonder if iTunes will start doing rentals in order to compete. I have been waiting for something like this for years now.

The current concept requires you to use a computer to access Amazon's Unbox site first before sending the movie directly to your Tivo. But I'm sure they will find a way to access it directly through the Tivo box in the future. Looks like the quality will be decent, better than the Tivo "Best Quality", and widescreen format. I'm not sure about Dolby Digital, though.
