iPhone roundup: Apple seeds 2.1 with new GPS features, possible copy/paste, also completely out of phones
Another bit which may or may not make it into 2.1 is copy/paste. We're still both hopeful and skeptical, but supposedly in the new version of the WebKit framework exists commands for "plugins," "copy," "paste," "cut," and some others. We can't confirm if these really exist (and if they do, we don't know how they've actually been there, or if they're simply holdovers from the desktop WebKit frameworks), so don't hold your breath. Also supposedly making its first appearance in the 2.1 beta code: Apple's push notification service.
Oh, and by the way, if all this has whet your appetite for the device, sounds like today will be a bad day to try and snag one. Apple's retail site shows absolutely zero iPhone availability in the US, so if you're jonesing then check out eBay or the seedy looking dude on the corner with the overstuffed trenchcoat.

So question, being that the iphone is the first apple product I've owned, how does one get these software updates? Are they sent out over the networks or do they come in when you sync?
Also, being that I'm up here in the great white north, is that something that rogers will be filtering out as they've done with other firmware updates to other phones in the past?

It will notify you of an available update one you connect it to iTunes.

Everytime you plug your iPhone into your computer and start up iTunes it will look for an update and ask if you want to install it. Click yes and your in business.

When you sync up your iPhone in iTunes, if there is an available update, it will alert you and give you the option to either select, "Yes I want to update," or "No, I don't want to update."
Also even though your on Rodgers, (which IMO is ironic that their owned in majority by AT&T here in the US), you should still be able to get the update since the updates are pushed through Apples servers and not through Rodgers. Plus, those European countries that received the iPhone Gen 1, they were able to update and were running on T-Mobile, Vodafone or O2. So I see no reason why you shouldn't get the update.

Just some clarification, AT&T does not hold a majority share in Rogers Wireless. Rules from the CRTC made it prohibitave for AT&T to do business as Rogers AT&T. Rogers bought them out in October 2004 for near $2 Billion Canadian. A shame though...bring Canada more competition and abolish the CRTC's control.

So will the update blank whatever I've done to the phone as in fresh start or will it just update selective things?
Also, back in 2004, Rogers bought back its shares from AT&T so they're a completely separate company now.

Wow Copy and Paste. I had that on my Windows 95 machine, my T-Mobile Dash, my Palm OS devices. Why Apple so slow to add such a simple and common feature. Sad.

do you realize your "palm os" devices have more flaws than iphone? so how about complianing about the iphones one or two flaws, we talk about your winmo's million. it goes both ways. so iphone isnt perfect yet, its on its way. and you cant say that about winmo or palm, cuz theyre still a year and a half behind iphone. just look at the web browsers for instance lmao :)

pretty sure every palm device ive sold has been capable of picture messaging via MMS... Can the same be said for the iphone?
opera mini does a pretty f-ing good job, and is available for WM5, WM6, and WM6.1 devices. I know this cause I had it on my i760 when it was WM6, and I have it now that my i760 is WM6.1 I fail to see what the iphone can do that my i760 cant be made to do with 3rd party apps. besides the 16gb of onboard storage.

The iPhone's version of Safari (coupled with the iPhone UI) is far and away better than Opera on WinMo (at least the non-touch version I had on my Dash). Have you used the iPhone's Safari?
And as for Visual Voicemail, I love it. I don't like voicemail in general so VVM makes it a bit more like email, which I prefer.

or visual voicemail, which i see no point in. When someone leaves me a voicemail, i check it within an hour, so VVM is useless to me. I know who left me a voicemail, and i rarely listen to entire voicemails, so I don't need to know how long a voicemail is before i listen to it.
